Cheap track day car??????

Hi,
Anyone got any suggestions what the best car would be (to use as a runabout 2nd car and to use on track days) for cheap money? (around 1k)
I've never done a track day b4 but thinking of trying it out.
would a hot hatch (205 gti, atra gte, golf gti) or would something like a large engined mk1 mondeo or cavalier/vectra be best?
Also would it be worth putting strut braces, cage etc in? (can have these custom made cheaply)
cheers for any info,
Dave
