Sydney Motorsport Park? Is that the best they could come up with. It sounds dull, bland and generic, nothing emotive about that title at all. Someone probably got paid for this, what a waste of money.

Meh I'll still call it Eastern Creek. And so will most others

Reminds me when Calder Park was named Keilor International Raceway for a while.

Everyone still called it Calder just like Eastern Creek will be "The Creek".

Agree that is pretty lame. And yeah some idiot probably got paid heaps to come up with it.

Sydney International Raceway sounds much better.

Never seen the words 'Keilor' and 'International' in the same sentence before

If they were smart they would have put it to the members to come up with a new name, the winning name getting a free track day or similar. I'm sure a motorsport member base could have come up with something much better than Sydney MotorSport Park.

Having a commercial sponsor in the title would have been more impressive...

At the time it kind of made sense (with the AGPs) but it does seem kinda funny now.

Aren't the NSW Government effectively the sponsor, so hence the name fits?

I hate stadia named after commercial sponsors - Sonora raceway, Emirates Stadium, Reebok Stadium... Meaningless and sycophantic. And when the commercial partner withdraws it gets renamed so no-one knows what or where it is any more.

With one exception. 20 years on, rally GB is still referred to by us old-timers as the RAC, and sometimes the RAC Lombard!

SPIRM lol!

Agree with Woolley, naming a venue based on a sponsor is a bad idea, if the name sticks and then the sponsor moves on, everyone will still refer to the facility using the old sponsors name, which would make it difficult and frustrating for any new sponsor.

I agree with that.

QEII Stadium in Brisbane, which amongst other things hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games, was renamed ANZ Stadium in 1993 through to 2003, when the sponsorship deal ended (known since 2004 as the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre)

In 2008 ANZ then did a deal to take over from Telstra the naming rights of the stadium in Sydney that hosted the 2000 Olympics..... it is now known as ANZ Stadium.... confusion central

Not sure if Top Gear were taking the p_ss but isn't Donington now called

'Simply Sausages Donington Park'

There is the only evidence you need as to why sponsor names shouldn't be on race tracks

does that mean Dawn French can take a short cut of 10% off the track if she ever races?

The Barry Sheen Motorsport Centre would be a fitting tribute (although our Wayne was instrumental in getting the bikes to EC) ....then we could substitute "BS" instead of "Bazza" when talking about the weird goings on there these days!

BSMC has a familiar ring to it....

Was the 1990 Nissan 500 the very first senior race meeting held there? Maybe they could name something after LP, as inaugural winner...
