STCC: First ever S200 diesel entered

The first ever Super 2000 diesel racing car will take part in STCC this year. Håkan Johansson is building a BMW 320 E46 diesel and hopes to be ready for the premiere at Knutstorp in May. "With the national rules of STCC it is possible, but we are not quite how this will work. No one has done this before," Håkan said.

The diesel engine is expected to put out around 230 to 240 bhp. "That is what we should have to be competitive. The rules say that there cannot be any visual smoke from the exhaust. Due to the environmental reasons and to get rid of the smoke we are planning to run a special filter," Håkan explained.

Håkan has driven race car for six year and has no doubt that he can hang on to the opponents. "I have the routine, it all depends on the engine if we can be compettetive," Håkan said. The premiere takes off at the 22:nd of May where Håkan will have to face 17 other STCC cars.

Are the diesels' more torquey in race trim as say they would be on the road ?

Bound to be an interesting car to watch it's progress, but I'd like to see a works team get behind a racing diesel.

That is still some way off the petrol engines (I understand they are over 280bhp now) but good luck to them!

They obviously don't apply in the UK then! Has anyone seen the Golfs and the Caddys in the VW Cup?

Good luck to them. It's about time someone tried this.

I guess the extra diesel engine torque gives them an advantage.

exactly what i was thinking, they'd have plooms of black smoke out the back, and the back of the cars filthy black

good luck in the stcc!

It might be 240Bhp but the engine must kick out over 350 lb/ft of torque, compared to the 180 -190 lb/ft the petrol's have. Should be interesting once they get it sorted.

Best of luck to them.

had a thought on the way home - diesel road cars chuck out visible smoke so why the strict rules?

If you watch a diesel car change down a gear and boot it, there will be a LOT of black smoke. Usually.

Gonna be pretty impressive if this Beemer can get rid of any visible smoke.
