I guess having a good mechanic day gives a happy day later! I see Delta finishing 4th of the fourth race with roughly the same LT than during Q. My personal hero Colin has improved his LT by no less than three seconds. E.B reports no fireworks seen from his window, so I guess Colin didn't try to fix his fuel leak by… welding!

Right here goes . I did not have much confidence in the gearbox repair but my friendly Hewland expert Howden Ganley gave me a lot of encouragement so went ahead with the repair . I could of started P4 but elected to start last as did not want to mess up race of the box decided to lock up . Gentle gentle for a few laps and then started pushing on . P7 with second fastest lap so well chuffed . Second race and they started me P2 . Good start and led into first corner but slipped to P4 . Car going like a train but still coughing coming out of slow corners . Hence got past by two cars . I was also second slower .I blame the man flu I have . Going to send Mike a fascinating photo . If you can post mike I will tell the story . 😀

Nice report! I can't imagine H Ganley back to the pub saying to his chaps" Hey guys, guess who I've been talking to? Yes, Iain The Rowley himself"!

Well, that's the first weekend done and dusted (emphasis on the dust), 7 sessions on track including 4 races and in 3 of the 4 I found a friendly gaggle of front engined cars to play with, excellent sport😁

Regular readers of my south-hemispherical bulletins might remember the fun Mrs M had 2 years ago when she insisted on pushing me around various paddocks in lieu of a starter motor. Well, guess what? Only this time the request was met with 'push your own ****** car' so I guess I'll have to spend a few dollars and find an electrician - one of the starter terminals has vanished without trace leaving a lonely wire waving in the breeze. No damage, nothing broken despite
being the southernmost point of the car and therefore the most likely bit to bounce off a kerb, even the spade connector is still there but just a bare blob of solder inside the body where the terminal and presumably its insulating block should be. So, apart from the leaky bag tank panic (note to self: check the mole grips are still there) and having to drive one-handed all the time it's been a doddle when compared to Iain's miracle repairs, but then I suspect he might know what he's doing whereas I most certainly don't!

Taking Team Delta & friends for a new experience tomorrow, if Iain writes about it I will judge it to have been a success, if not I won't mention it again😂

Howden joined us for bbq this evening, left when the conversation got a bit too robust even for an antipodean🤣 Charming guy who listened patiently to our tales of derring do but who must have so many stories of his own to tell, much too modest to interrupt. Gave us some good pointers for places worth visiting, you'd think he would know these islands inside out but he's still discovering places he hasn't been before. A real gent of the old school.

I have teamed up with Tony Olissoff this trip he has the F3 Brabham . This is photo of his engine . We were just going off to collecting area and his throttle is sticking . We both have a look and I find the nut is missing from the far end of the Down draft Webber that holds throttle spring . I’m sure you all know Webber’s have there own thread pitch and any hope of us having a nut were non excistant . Brain wave and I had a couple of plastic number plate nuts . Wound this on and we just got to collecting area on time and both had a good race . Now checking cars over after the race preping for next and Tony calls me over . Have a close look at photo the nut is resting right next to rocker cover . So the nut came of on last race Saturday .Ended up there and stayed all through first race Sunday . Miricle or what .

You read Howden's book, Colin? Its brilliant, he signed my copy at the HSCC DD a few years ago. One of the best racing books I have!

Sorry Dan, missed your post. Not read Howden's book yet, currently on Tony Goodwin's story, Howden's next!

As the season is kicking off over here I reckon I ought to post some of the pics from my early start in NZ. To get you in the mood while I rummage through my phone here's a bit of in-car footage from Ruapuna viewed from Michael Sexton's Stanguellini which was 1 of 3 front-engine cars involved in a midfield tussle for the first half of the race. I started at the front of this scrap, and finished at the back handicapped by having to hang on to the gearstick to stop it jumping out of gear through the corners. Driver's Excuse book page 24 number 6 Robin Lackford in his Elva was the other participant.

Juniors to start, left to right:

1. The Junior camp at Ruapuna
2. Alex Morton and his immaculate Lightning Envoyette won every race at all 3 meetings

3&4. Kevin Andersen's battle worn T52, ex Denny Hulme
5. Nigel Russell's splendid Stanguellini. He generously offered me use of the car after the Gemini's demise in qualifying at Teretonga, but I know what it costs to fix these......
6. One for Bauble - inventive motorhomes abound in NZ, this elderly Bedford CF benefits from a 3 litre Holden straight 6, it was the noise that first attracted me!

Ah! The Bedford CF ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_straight-six_motor

Apparently the CF was available with 2 versions of the straight six in Australasia. Something I was not aware of before but hardly surprising given it was an Oz build.

More surprising (perhaps not to bauble) is that there was an electric version of the CF manufactured between 1982 and 1987

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedford_CF

Scroll down some way for a paragraph about it if interested.
