Now that really comes as a surprise. He's not their reserve driver, is he?

What a very odd choice of driver for a factory team...

I thought they already had two testers; Grosjean and Di Grassi?

Di Grassi is their reserve driver, Grosjean is a tester, Yamamoto I imagine will mostly do the Renault Roadshow demonstrations perhaps with a test every once in a while.

The Nissan GT-R is Renault's fastest production car right now, and it is produced in Japan.

In 2000 Benetton signed as a test driver some Japanese guy called Hidetoshi Mitsusada (spelling?), which was F3000 driver too... but, I believe, he was fired soon after Renault bought the team and Flavio returned as team boss... funny to see the repetition of this 8 years later... with Flavio welcoming this guy on board

Contract with sponsorship convenience??? Mitsusada entered with backing of MTCI that time. He also entered in F3000 at team WRT and he only lasted three races where he can't qualify even at one (at those times where 30 cars on a grid of 26). Later returned to the F-Nippon but he wasn't long enough there too. Now races in the Japanese GTs.

This move is almost certainly motivated by Renault trying to improve their sales in Japan. Sakon may have F1 experience, but not of competitively driving capable cars, so I doubt he can add too much to Renault's development.

My mind went blank when I read Yamamoto. I kept thinking of other Japanese drivers, temporarily forgetting who Yamamoto was. Nakajima kept springing to mind, and I was quite pleased at this.
I then woke up. Nakajima is at Williams fool! The true scale of this announcement left me bewildered, hurt and confused. Still, could have been Yuji Ide I suppose. |

Im in shock still. Then again, I was in shock when Hulkenberg joined Williams, that was a serious coup in my opinion. (Sorry to go slightly off topic)
