Anthony Reid at Goodwood FoS

I've just been watching the FoS on ITV and saw Anthony Reid in a spectacularly well-kept Primera.

I was just wandering if anyone has some info on that particular car, i.e where has it been kept all these years and what has it done since the BTCC- it looks too original (and clean! ) to have done much racing elsewhere....

It was run by the guys at Pro Motorsport. Presuming it was their own car rather than one run on behalf of Nissan here is a bit about it's history:

1999 BTCC: Laurent Aiello (Championship winner)
2000 BTCC: Colin Blair and David Leslie (Independant Championship)
2000 STCC: David Leslie (Selected rounds only)
2001 ETCC: Sandro Sardelli
2004 Formula Saloons/Super Touring Trophy: Jonathon Young

I will enquire whether or not it was the ex-Aiello car.

Interesting, thanks for that. I assume then that it's been converted back from the newer spec, as I remember the Sardelli car having the updated front/rear lights and aero package. Looks good though!

Good point... lends itself to the idea it may have been a car owned by Nissan rather than that sold on to Pro. I will let you know when I hear back from my friend who is part of that team.

RML did run the cars in the BTCC, but I think Pro Motorsport bought some of them after '99 and ran them in Europe until the end of 2001

right i understand now !! because i have a magazine here and it has an article on that mid engined Micra, which was built by RML and they used the SR20DE engine from the BTCC car.

According to Nissan's press office it was the PRO Motorsport owned car as described by Craig. Add a few Scotish Saloons and Formula Saloons outings to that list.

Last I saw the car prior to Goodwood was at the Super Touring Challenge at Sneterton last year and the preperation then was every bit as good as at Goodwood.

Interesting to note that Reid put in the second fastest officially timed run at Goodwood, which is pretty impressive given some of the other machines there.

Yeah, I was impressed with Reid's time too, he was obviously really going for it. I would be interested to see how his time compared with one set by the new touring cars that were present (Neal & Chilton I think), but they probably didn't do competitive times

Isn't Goodwood a fairly twisty track? If so, having lots of engine hp doesn't really help you? Intead, having good handling car is more advantageous?

I think reid was more showing his own capabillites off as he is without a drive, as most people who were there are in a more solid drive this year, as everyone else seemed to be doing donughts, and things, of course i could be wrong.

redshoes' excellent website has all the pics you could want from Goodwood, including the Primera. Check this link, page 2 I think-

So do manufacturers like Nissan, Audi, Porsche, etc... rent these machines, redecal them in period decal scheme and run them at Goodwood? Or are the new owners just diehard and provide the cars for free?

You'd have to ask Nissan, Audi, etc.
Most of the historially important cars there are already in period livery. Many are owned by the manufacturers anyhow. It's only semi-modern cars like the Primera that are still in use with a different livery. My guess is that in this case Nissan rented the team/car for the weekend.

I'm under the impression manufacturers don't keep many of their semi-modern cars anymore? They get sold at the end of the season to finance the racing program? Or maybe they keep one and it ends up in their museum, never to be raced again?

I think in the case of the BTCC the term 'manufacturer' is a bit misleading, as most of the cars were run by teams on behalf of the manufacturer (eg Prodrive, WSR, Arena etc). The level of financial/technical support from a car maker can determine whether the team are classed as 'works' or 'independent' (witness the WSR/MG tie-up of recent years as a good example of how that status switches).

As for the retention of cars, I know that prodrive have held on to the 2000 Menu championship winning Mondeo, kept in their 'museum'. There was an interesting article on it in Fast (or Performance?) Ford last year detailing what has happened to it since retirement.
