Slip-slidin' away

Watching the (superb) "La Ronde Infernale", I love the amount the the cars (especially Porsche 917) slide and move about. Most impressive is the 917 out of Arnage, but it also visibly slips at the Ford chicane.

What i'd like to know is how much did Group C cars ever move around, and were they visually spectacular to watch?

Not a whole lot. The ground effects tended to cancel out insane yaw angles.

True, but they had there moments. See a certain Mr D. Bell in the final stages at Le Mans in '83. With cracked brake discs he ALMOST broke the lap record by driving the car sideways.....

Overall, Group C was probably more spectacular for the overall performance and racing than its sideways moments!

I never saw a Gp C race, but they seem to look as though, if the cars gets into a movement of air it doesn't like, it will just take off with itself. From the minimal video I've seen from them, they look rather twitchy. That's probably from the drivers hangin' those things out 'til they see God, then brake.

Watching the C1 cars at Arnage was a great opportunity to watch them hanging out rear ends. Bell in the shell 962 in 88 had the exact same amount of slide, taking about a foot from the rumble strip lap in, lap out. It was also a cracking place to see a slide turn into a spin if it got damp. Tetre rouge into the mulsanne straight was also pretty damn good for a bit of slippery pokery.

It might not be quite as wondrous as Gp C, but one of my best memories of LM 2002 was a GT class F360 getting rather sideways at Tertre Rouge, at dusk. In the middle of France. (getting quite emotional now!) June can't come quick enough....
