956/962 Drawings and Specs ?

Ive just been reading about the 956/962 and was surprised to learn that they actually used a primitive kind of metal bonding on the chassis . Where Aluminium structure was rivited together , placed between the two mating surfaces was glue soaked cloth . Primitive but it worked , but only for a period of time as the glue disbonded with flexing . The result was obviously a flexing chassis and the only way to rectify that was to derivit the tub and start all over again .

What I would like to know is , what kind of spec aluminium did they use in the construction of the 956/962 ?

Im familier with 2024-T-3,5056,7075-T-6,6061 and specs like that , how thick was the metal used , .040 thou for example and where could I get a scale drawing of the 956/962 ?

Slightly unrelated, but does anyone know if Tamiya makes a full detail Porsche 962? I have the "From A" curbside 962 as well as the full detail Rothmans 956. Was curious if the Tamiya Joest 962 is full detail as the Tamiya '88 Shell 962 is not.

Its a kurbside too . I made the mistake of buying one , but the fit of the glass is perfect !!!

I dont know what to do with the model , as the rad ducts are way too shallow . So , Ive just cut the tail of the Tamiya 962C , and am now seeing if I can graft it onto the Tamiya 956 ..... then hopefully I can have a short tail 956 . Im not sure if the tail will be correct though .

But wasnt there also differances in the LM & sprint nose too ?

Yes, 956 (and 962) Le Mans nosecones were different from the "standard" ones. Also 956 and 962 LM nosecones are different...and 962 (short) tail could possibly be different from 956's. The cars used different size rear tires, so its wheelarches are bigger than 956's.

Ok , back to square one . Thanks for pointing that out . I could have made a right cock up . Im sure there was even more differances , like the hump around the top naca duct too .

I cant answer the question of what grade of ali they used in the tubs but i work on two 962's and they were made by different people, one was built by porsche, the other the tub was made by a company under licence called thompson, the differences between chassis is subtle but varied, so the ali grade could well be different between manufacturers, like the porsche tub has antiroll bar mounts on the front and top wishbone box section, are ali but on the thompson chassis they are made from steel.

Is one of the an ex-Kremer or Brun tub . Would you mind telling me the chassis numbers please ? Didnt the Thompson chassis use a lot more carbon fibre too ?

I envy your job mate ..... I fix airplanes for a living , much prefer to tool about with a 962 !!!

Is there something like a strucrural repair manual supplied with your cars , maybe it would be mentioned there ?

Do you know where I might get scale drawings for the 956/962 ? I did come across some model site a few months ago , that had scale drawings that you can buy , but I lost the addy and cant find it anymore ?

I can remember that one is 111, the other i cant remember other than it a kremer car but a thompson tub. the carbon tubs from what i understand were later as ours has no carbon in the tub construction, it is of 1986 vintage, and is near identical to the porsche manufactured cars. I think carbon cars were used about 88/89- later generation of group c cars going into the final demise of group c

They were purchased second hand so no real original documentation.

I do have 956 technical manuals which look fairly original but photocopied, problem is its in german i dont speak german to really help you. if you are interested i can sell you one.

Yes, basically cutting, lenghtening, re-shaping Tamiya longtail 956. Did other versions of GTi/RLR '87-88 962 too.

Don't know, apart from the ones that can be found under 956+962 @ http://carblueprints.narod.ru/porsche.htm (they are mostly from Tamiya kits)

962-111 was originaly built in feb of 1985 for Team Nova in Japan . It was driven by
Thankwell,Okada,Nielson,Takahashi,Schuppan,Suzuki,Fouche .

Takahashi-Takahashi won the 1986 JS-PC championship with that car for Team Nova . So you got yourself a champion there mate .
