8 Different Winners!
There have been 8 different winners this season, I can't remember having that many winners in one year before, is it a record?

1982 holds most records of this nature.

I gave a quick answer, to at least point people in the right direction for their own research. However, now I am back at home and have more time.
Prost (2), Lauda (2), Pironi (2), Watson (2), Patrese, Piquet, Arnoux (2), Tambay, de Angelis, Rosberg (World Champion) and Alboreto all won GP. That's 11 drivers folks. It could be equalled this year still! |

Anyone fancy working out the ratio of different victors to competitors for the past 53 seasons (ie. number of victors / sum of race entries over the season)? I think if you took total number of entrants rather than qualifiers there's a good chance this year would come out on top given the relatively few drivers.

Perhaps but remember in the past there were far fewer events than today, I think the first season only had something like 6 races.

That's a good point. '82 might also beat 2003 under this system because I may have been overestimating the number of entries (pre-qualifying only began c.1987 didn't it?)--I've also just realised that the '82 San Marino GP only had about 8 entries due to the FOCA/FISA bunfight.
Note to self: in future think, then post... Last edited by Gore; 26 Aug 2003 at 19:15. |

Worth noting that the last year in which 8 or more different drivers won races was 1985 which also had 8 winners; Prost (5), Alboreto/Senna/Mansell/Rosberg (2 each), Piquet/Lauda/de Angelis (1 each though Elio gained his win after Prost was disqualified from the Imola race).
Other years with 8 or more winners: 1975 - 9 winners: Lauda (5), Emmo (2), Pace/Scheckter/Mass/Hunt/Reutemann/Brambilla/Regazzoni (1 each) 1977 - 8 winners: Mario (4), Lauda/Scheckter/Hunt (3 each), Reutemann/Nilsson/Laffite/Jones (1 each) 1982 - 11 winners (covered already) 1983 - 8 winners: Prost (4), Piquet/Arnoux (3 each), Watson/Tambay/Rosberg/Alboreto/Patrese (1 each) Can anyone see a 9th different winner this year? If so, who? Perhaps Trulli? |

Good work x_dt, good to see someone has as much time to kill as I do
I see that each of the years mentioned has included at least one driver's final/only victory ('75: Pace, Mass, Brambilla; '77: Nilsson; '82: Pironi, de Angelis; '83: Watson). Bad news for Fisi? Or perhaps next season won't actually be Coulthard's year at all..? Last edited by Gore; 26 Aug 2003 at 20:06. |

I doubt we will see a 9th winner ,Trulli is the only guy who has the car to do it but his race day performances are not up to mark

I was going to mention Webber, but it would take a lot of bad luck for the others (JPM, Rafe, Michael, Rubens, Kimi, DC and Alonso) all to fail imo.

I think realistically for there to be a ninth winner it could only come from either Trulli who has the car but struggles to compete in races or Webber who has the ability to win races but i don't believe the Jaguar has race winning potential yet. Somehow i think we'll have to be content for eight winners this year.

One more point is, to evaluate the championship equilibrium, how many winner teams hve been there.
For instance , this year is 5 up to now(Ferrari, Macs, Jordan, Williams, Renault), i.e. 50% of the field In 1982 should be: Ferrari, Williams, Brabham, McLaren, Lotus, Tyrrell, Renault, for a total of 7, once again 50% of the teams won at least a GP |

If that is the most ever, what is the least? I am guessing its 2-3, That one would be good as a ratio to races I think, any ideas?

Seems like that, and if it wasn't for Ayrton's stupid mistake at Monza while lapping Schlesser, it would have been only two...but maybe was of a general interest that Ferrari could win at Monza that year, perhaps Senna accident was a politically correct decision, infact I remember he was not too worried about that, in the post-race interviews
