Because I have a hospital visit on Friday I was obliged to take a Covid test prior to going, so I ordered a Lateral Flow Test pack from the NHS web site. The kit arrived was ordered on Friday and arrived Monday. All very efficient, but I was a little nonplussed to discover the thing was made in China! They cause the problem and are now benefiting from the fall out. Nice work if you can get it.

PS: Relax I tested negative!

For my part, I think I'm better at word puzzles where I can work out an answer, rather than relying on a septaguenarian memory......I appreciate that your puzzles often combine the two disciplines, but for me the failing of visual memory usually means I have no clue what you are driving at....and as I don't like being beaten, I tend to venture into the puzzle area much less than the purely pictorial lounge....

You get post on a Saturday? Luxury! (in best Northern accent)
We (in Melbourne anyway not sure of other cities) get one delivery a day, Monday to Friday. We dont ever get mail dropping through the door. We have letterboxes at the end of our driveway on the street. If something does not fit in the letterbox we get a card in the letterbox telling us to collect it from the local PO.
Parcel Post is totally separate here. They will come to your door. But you have to be quick because they ring the door and walk away. You have to be very quick to get them. If you have given your postie a decent Xmas box he might leave it at your door, but some senders tick a box that does not allow their parcel to be left, and again you get a card telling you what PO you can collect it from and when.

Chris, the UK's not quite that bad, but it's not like it was when you lived here. Gone, as far as I can tell, are the Sunday deliveries that we used to have in December to cater from the sackfuls of Xmas cards, etc. And we only have one delivery a day now, but at least that is also on Saturday but I expect that to go in the near future as snail mail is getter less and less at time goes on.

As for parcels and large packages, the postie and Parcel Force (which is now split off from Royal Mail) will often deliver your bulky stuff to a neighbour - well, they do around these parts - if you don't answer the door. Or, like all the parcel delivery people, they will leave it in what they consider to be a secure place around your property, take a photo of it - Oh, and a photo of the parcel or package now seems to be acceptable as a signature, but that doesn't apply, I believe, for Recorded Delivery for Royal Mail - and then go on their way having posted a note through your letter box of where to find it. Unfortunately, this has led to a new line in thievery, where those intent on no good watch where packages are being left and then taking them, often not caring that CCTV is monitoring them as they know that low level crime like that is now not usually or often followed up by the police, and even if it was, the punishment tends to be even less than a slap on the wrist.

Personally I've always found it down to the individual. our posties locally are really good, althogh PO reforms a few years back forced a load of them to retire or move on.

One of the TNT drivers I befriended (cars in common) now works for the PO, when @ TNT I missed my tyres being delivered, I gave him a call, he was 2 miles up the road having lunch, so i drove over to met him!

Most of the Local posties used to go to the pub on Christmads eve. Buy them a round and you never lose anything. An insurance policy if you like.

For relatively small packages - something that should fit in a standard letterbox - Amazon Prime services may now arrive via the regular letter post deliveries around here. A next-day service too! In fact a day earlier than Prime was promising.

That said, our most regular local postie was, she told my wife, off isolating a few weeks ago and we had no deliveries for a week.

She returned to find a huge backlog that took her another week to deal with.

It's been a while since I can recall buying anything, no matter the "brand name" that was not made in China.

In fact, even if the item can claim to be made elsewhere, the chances are that most of the components come from manufacturing facilities in China.

Back in the day they used to say "Made in Hong Kong".

I bought a new electric toothbrush last week, fooled by the fancy 'Philips' box into thinking I was buying a quality product from a respected brand. However I failed to spot the 'Made in Romania' tucked away on one side.

Opening it up I was somewhat disappointed to find a rather flimsy-feeling affair that is definitely not up to Chinese production quality. I suspect it won't last very long. Even the packing inside the box was rather cheap, nasty & very East European.

Hmm. Eastern Europe using grade B parts and packaging?

Of course one exception to my previous observation would be cars, an area where car manufacturing (as opposed to Brand ownership) has so far tended to not be in China, although Tesla seem to be changing that.

Slovakia seems to have become the new "Local" but not previously mainstream specialist country for car manufacturing.

Difficult to avoid the made in China or RPC nowadays. The Avons we use used to be made in Slovakia (or may be Slovenia) they are now made in RPC and the first deliveries clearly show the quality is not the same. Even the eco label has been changed.

Well that was a busy day. Set off to Belgium to deliver a FF2000 early this morning. On route I had an e mail to say the Delta truck had passed its MOT "happy days". No problems at all at Border control and I arrived at Verviers 11 am. Plan was to meet in services car park but there were wall to wall Belgium Rozzers pulling in all the dodgy trucks. They did not seem at all interested in the UK van and trailer off loading racing car and all its spares.
After and handful of sausage bread "sausage rolls"given to me i set of to Bethune to collect a Formula Junior. This is where it gets interesting.I arrived and got chatting to this guy and it turns out his Dad raced the Gilby sports car that Len Terry built. His Dad still has the car although its been in bits from what I can gather for many many years. I left telling his son that we must keep in touch and get the car back out on track. Such a pretty car with lots of period history.
Anyway return journey just as uneventful as the outward trip and I even got an early train by 3 hours and did not get charged any extra."bought Mrs Delta some perfume " More happy days.
