Could those wishing to form part of this team please PM me with your name and available duties. Flag for you Kevin seeing as you are allergic to rescue units? |

Or will it be good as I try to find my way from car to post in the pitch black? Can't speak for PieMan, but I do really need all the help I get - "I'm old and past it, you know" |

Apologies if this is a really "blonde question" but, I am doing this event for the first time and have never flagged a 24hr event before. How exactly do you flag in the pitch black?

Not really a daft question.. as soon as the clerk declares it dark.. you then use the light poles that will be supplied to your post.. also you would then be required to wear the supplied Hi-Vis tabard/waistcoat.. Regards Roy |

With Difficulty .....
When it starts to get dark race control will announce over the radio that it is "officially" night time.
At this point all flag posts switch to "incident only" signals. Each post is supplied with an orange lamp and switch on a pole and a car battery. For any incident where you would normally put out a yellow flag you use the orange light. Use the switch for flashing(waved) or stationary. Just need to find somewhere to stick the pole, close to your seat, where the drivers can see it. You will be provided with a radio so should be able to hear what is going on on the rest of the circuit. HTH. |

Im going to get a head torch for this year so I'm not relying on my camping light (which is broken anyway!) not that I used it last year but always helpful. Saw some on offer in Bridgend the other day, should have bought a couple, that would have continued the Welsh theme too |

I just thought during the night flagging rules were hear screech, wake up, pull switch down for stationary or hear bang do the same but push switch up for flashy!!!! Once you hear cars racing again you know safety car is in so turn off!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sheila, light will be OK in the fog - just watch your eyes for the reflection but if you are as past it as you say then your eyes are problably poor anyway!!! Bit of advice for the virgin flaggies, bring gaffa tape, cable ties, sunglasses & 2 of 3m x 3m tarpaulins - a must have in the kit bag. gaffa tape for safety car board (tape onto hazard board - saves sore arms) and cable ties for light pole - you can then secure them round the flag point structure rather than where it will fit. Also good for securing your gazebo to what ever you can find that is heavy. 3m x 3m tarpaulins are to make gazebo curtains, stops your kit getting wet when the dew (or fog) comes down Sun morning. Sunglasses are for during the night - trust me some posts you end up blind with the headlights!!! Luffield in springs to mind. |

For those not able to get the Aldi ones mentioned above, another possible source for good cheap torches is
www.dealextreme.com Prices include delivery from Honk Kong and normally take about a week. Use paypal. Head torches are here. I use both these and the much more expensive Petzl branded items and most of the time I don’t notice any appreciable difference. Petzl do have a slightly better harness is about all. To get your own back on the brightness stakes (Paul’s reference above on the need to wear shades) I suggest these. I now use them for work and prefer them to proper Maglites. Brighter, batteries last longer oh and a steal at less than £1.50 each delivered. Don’t care if I drop them or someone “borrows” them. Another possible source is www.ledshoppe.com but I have not used them for some time. HTH |

Great site Flag Monkey.
I just need to know how I've managed to get through life without one of these though. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4791 |
