The oil/fuel ,companies
The oil & fuel companies do they really need V 8 SUPERCARS to market their products & wares , I think not , look at the price / per barrel of crude oil at the moment ?

At this time, you're going for the cheapest, not what "your" team uses and recommends.

Motorsport sponsorship is vitally important to the marketing of oils and fuels, regardless of the world price of oil at present.
It is not just about branding, but how the sponsorships are 'leveraged'. For example, Castrol has withheld the attempts of Mobil, with HSV endorsement, from gaining the business of the Holden dealers that they supply. How?, by using Larry and his team over many years in various sales and marketing campaigns that the public do not see. Supplying oil to car dealers is big business. There was an excellent article in V8X a while ago about oil sponsorships. BP is a good example of a weak sales and brand image by not using motorsport for its marketing. BP Visco or whatever it is called has a minor market share against Mobil 1, Castrol GTX, Valvoline XLD, etc that use motorsport as part of their marketing. |

Maybe Shell and Caltex don't need it as much as they did, but to keep market share there might be a need to promote the Coles/Woolworths battle instead with less prominant fuel company logos.

The current coles deal is the best marketing technique Coles have ever used. On Average people are buying 25L at shell depots which is saving the around $1 on fuel each week. Coles are seeing $16 increase per week from these customers that have switched for the discount. Now that is good marketing and Coles have now taken over the complete distribution of shell outlets which reduceds overheads for shell who don't make any money out of fuel sales anyway. Win Win for all involved.

Except the brainstrust at Woolworths and Coles are starting to cotton on to the fact that they can squeeze even more money out of their suppliers to help fund the petrol deal... and are offering enticements such as extra sales distribution thru these fuel outlets as an incentive to cough up even more money....
... when the retailers squeeze suppliers, they dont tend to pass the benefits back to the consumer... |

I would have to agree with GTR on this one. (sorry mate know you dont like me on your side) with the grocery chain deals (and lets face it how many of us do use shopper dockets )now in full swing the reliance ob this type of advertising is of less importance. The fuel companies are relying more on dealer networks, I know a ford dealer that has just had castrol put in 35 new hoists free of charge in return for his business.

In the July 1-7, 2004 issue of the Business Review Weekly, there was a hugely interesting article titled "Coles Myer are dills" - Gerry Harvey scorns John Fletcher's discount strategy.
It is a long article and worthy of reading - you really need to read it two or three times to absorb it all. I will try and find a link. No doubt someone here subscribes.... |

The Coles share price suggests Gerry Harvey is the dill not John Fletcher: our sport benefits from the K-Mart sponsorship, yet another plus for Fletcher. PS Fletchers brother Craig was employed on the original HDT VC build program - I think Craig runs the motorsport division of Octagon Aus. I understand Shell was very unimpressed by Coch0 & said so with his threat to give WA a miss a few years back as the mining industry over west use more than its share of petroleum products. Certainly more than the local servo. |

I buy my petrol at Caltex.
Not because of any motorsport sponsorship, but because they (well this particular one) takes both my Motorcharge Card and the Supermarket Discount Vouchers. I shop at the supermarket anyway - no change to me The Petrol Station is one of the ones close to me and on the way to *everything* anyway. Shell and Woolies Home Brand ones do not take Motorcharge or the combination of voucher + Motorcharge. David. Last edited by DKGandBH; 27 Oct 2004 at 05:50. |
