Going by your criteria surely Torro Rosso didn't deserve it either? If the 3 hadn't gone out on the first lap then at best Sainz would have been 7th?

yes, but they still beat their competition. They are racing Force India, Renault, Williams/Mclaren (depending on track, apparently).
Mercedes is racing Ferrari and Red Bull, at 75% of that competition knocked itself out before T1.
