Favourite race at Suzuka

Well, the last race of the season is coming up soon at Suzuka. I predict Michael will dominate the race from start to finish to take his 11th win of 2002.

But which was the best race you have seen at Suzuka so far and why?

My vote goes to 2000. A brilliant duel between Michael and Mika that continued for the entire race. The tension and excitement was incredible. Mika led most of the way, but Michael got ahead on lap 40 in his pit stop but for the remaining 13 laps, he had to stay ahead of Mika, and the pair of them finished just seven-tenths (I think, I could be wrong) of a second apart, Michael winning both the race and the 2000 WDC.

I only saw 1998-2001 races at Suzuka. But that 1994 one sounds like one of the best F1 races of all time!!! I'm surprised www.seasonf1.com don't have it. I guess it's because the result was decided by aggregate. Was Michael Schumacher asleep that day or something?

2000 no doubt.

But quick straw poll: who's going to stay up and watch it this year?? Nope, me neither. How sad.

I'll probably end up watching it next weekend. Got to get my moneys worth from F1D+

Some of my favourite races include 1993; Senna winning from Prost in the wet, Mika's first podium and Irvine unlapping himself and copping a punch from Aryton for his troubles.
1994; Damon winning the 2 part, aggregate times race in the wet.
1998; Mika's first WDC. Schuey stalling it at the start, fighting back through to 3rd only for his tyre to burst.

Good memories from Japan.

2000 wasn't really that good, it was a pitstop that decided the race. I'd say 1994 or 1996, or even 1998, Schumi carving through the field, driving the wheels of the car.

Best Suzuka race?

Hmmm...

1987 - Berger's first win in the Ferrari while the Honda home party was ruined!!!

1989 - the infamous clash between Senna and Prost, but also the fact Sandro Nannini was gifted his first victory (although it was still deserved) after Senna was disqualified.

1990 - a few simple words: ROBERTO MORENO, BENETTON, SECOND PLACE!!

1993 - Senna v the Williams drivers, while a young Ulsterman by the name of Eddie Irvine made his presence felt, and later got an uppercut from the Brazilian

1994 - Damon outraces TGF but the best battle was Alesi v Mansell. Brilliant!

1998/99 - Mika shows his class both years, winning the races and the title

1994.

How cares about Damon? Alesi vs Mansell, the stuff of legends.

1994 has been the best Japanese Grand Prix in the past 10 years. 1976 must have been brilliant (I wasn't around to watch it back then). But Schumacher's comeback drive in the 1998 one was also brilliant and provided a bit of excitement and interest.

Comeback drive? Most of the field moved over for him!! The only one who put up a fight was Damon, and then he (and Ralf) whinged about it afterwards!!!

1987 Prost's drive to 7th was amazing. After falling a lap behind he put eveything into it and all for no reward (he was the quickest from lap 2 till the end).

1990 and 1991 were very important too.

1994 was a great race. Why aren't we allowed aggragate races now (the FIA thinks we are all too stupid to know what's going on?). A great drive from Damon.

1996. Damon again. Not a great race, but I loved it all the same.

1997 Eddie Irvine from 4th passes Hakkinen, then Villenvue and TGF then lets him thru to lead. ah that was as exciting as it got, eddie is sent off into the distance as a pointman for TGF and then energes to protect his tail. Somehow I think Frentzen came 2nd. Can';t quite remember, but definitely Irv blitzing JV in the esses for 2nd place.

Yeah 1997 too. Actually is one of my favorites races, not only Suzuka. Excellent teamwork from Ferrari.

Eddie got 3rd, but he sacrificed his race as he was on an extra pitstop, in order to get a light car... Excellent race.

It was more drama in it; Jacques was DQed, after breaking the pitlane speed (4 time in that season I believe and he already got a suspension ban), Williams appealed so they let them start the race. Should the apeal failed (and it certainly would) he would've not only DQ'ed for Suzuka, but he would also get a ban for Jerez! So he started with a heavy fuel load and the plan was to slow the pack and help as many of the other cars to pass Schumacher. Then withdraw the apeal. They did that, but Schumacher won the race.

Wasn't JV disqualified because of a yellow flag infringement (not speeding in the pitlane).

And it was nowhere near certain that he would have been made to miss Jerez as well if they lost the appeal. The FIA are a bit random and Williams might have been worried that would happen.

Can't remember for sure, but he got warnings for both of them. Yes, the 1 race ban wasn't certain, but the risk was somewhere above 50%. They didn't want to risk...
