Why are ERC 1600cc and 2000cc cars separated by FWD and RWD?
As I understand the regs, you can't run a RWD car in the 1600 class nor a FWD car in the 2ltr class. What is the reasoning behind this?

The Super1600s class is only open to 1.6 FWD cars and was set up to bring some kind of S1600s into the ERC, while the idea behind the TouringCars was to bring rather modern SuperNationals with their spectacular RWD style into the sport. However, did not really work out, as most TCs are too compact to behave like those Swedish rear-wheel driven Volvo 240s or S40s (Mk1 and Mk2) and engines were limited to 2.0 (most SuperNational Volvos have brutal 2.9 mills).

Thanks. In terms of lap times, are the 1600 and 2ltr cars similar (notwithstanding the RWD cars would be quicker off the line)?

Be interested to know the answer to this. I thought the S1600 cars looked considerably faster than the Touring Cars at Lydden: be interested to know if the times reflect that!

Thanks FIRE; but I'm confused.
FIA document says all wheels limited to just under 10" wide but Supercar wheels look no larger than 8" wide. Likewise the 1600s seem to be running Super-1600 rally wheels which are 7x17. I would never have thought a FWD 1600 car would have been faster than a RWD 2 litre car from a standing start in short races despite the 100Kg weight penalty but obviously the times speak for themselves. |
