are glamorous girls essential to motorsport?

Does anyone feel that the popularity of having glamorous girls at motorsport race meetings is waning?

Is this because more women are watching the sport?

Or is it just that the teams and organisers cannot afford to have the girls there and that's why we don't see so many?

I would be interested in your opinion!

To answer the question. No they are not essential. I like a pretty girl as much as the next man, but I don't go to a motor race to see them.

As an aside I'm off to Le Mans next week and there will be the usual Hawian Tropic girls no doubt.

Perhaps a question to you though gridmodels, is motor racing essential to glamorous girls?

The reason for my interest in the opinion of motorsport enthusiasts such as yourselves on this subject is that we have found this season that many of the teams, particularly in F1 but also in other series, are no longer using girls to promote their brand and I am interested in whether this makes a difference to the fans or not.

The BTCC this year put no grid-girls into the budget in Dunlop's sponsorship proposal, leaving it up to the teams whether to employ their own girls. In British Superbikes few of the teams an afford girls according to them; most use friends and family to stand in where they can. Even F1 teams such as Jordan who in the past were typically associated with Page 3 girls such as Jordan have declined to use their own girls. F1 is one of the few championships where the grid is filled by grid-girls provided by the organisers themselves rather than by each team.

I can see that some women might see grid-girls as politically incorrect; but if that is the case then so is having an all male set of drivers!! I get hundreds of applications from girls wanting to be grid-girls so there are obviously many women who do agree with their necessity! So yes, maybe motorsport is of interest to these glamorous girls!!

My personal opinion is that it's all a bit of fun! Everyone likes to see a pretty girl don't they? I think the teams need to lighten up and have some fun!

I remember a classic moment at Knockhill BTCC a few years ago. Al Hyde went down the grid asking each their name and which driver they represented. Despite holding a board with the driver's name on and being stood in front of the car many didn't know or couldn't pronounce the name. Most are their not through any love of motorsport but simple because it pays the bills.

I've never fully understood the whole grid girl thing. As a spectator sat at say Donington Old Hairpin I can't even see the grid so how does having a few lycra clad bimbos do anything to improve my day out. You mention the BTCC for example. They've got enough problems at the moment and I can think of far better things the budget could be spent on.

Just because you are beautiful does that mean you have no brain and can have no interest in motorsport? I worked as a grid-girl for 6 years and I enjoy following many different championships as an enthusiast. I have a degree from a top university and run my own company. Many of my girls do the grid as well as high-flying office jobs and university degrees. Most are just fun-loving girls who like the atmosphere just as other enthusiasts do.

Taking this a little off topic, there are a number of people who do get involved "just for the love of it" - thinking of course of marshals and drivers at lower levels (in fact at financial detriment).
There could well be an argument that grid girls, if they are in it mainly for enjoyment, should just accept a free ticket and do their required duties, and then enjoy the day at all other times. Of course, this isn't purely the case, and I'm sure that although there are a number of professional grid girls (for lack of a better term, I'm sure there is one though...) that enjoy motorsport and the atmosphere, there is certainly a large number that are just in it for a job, I struggle to believe otherwise.

Answering the question directly - as a promotional tool, of course glamorous girls are needed - sex sells! They're not directly essential to motorsport - they don't generally add anything to the meeting. But indirectly, they do make people look at the sponsors and raise sponsor's profiles, thus draw in more sponsors, and sponsors bring in the money, and the money is needed for the racing. There's probably other ways that sponsor's profiles can be raised, so grid girls are not a necessity or an only means - and as we've seen in the BTCC this year can be cut. But they have traditionally been shown to work, so if it ain't broke, why fix it? And there's other nicities, of course ;-)

I agree with Al on this one. Whether they enjoy motorsport or not doesn't really matter. Who cares if they dont know the name of the driver or the car he's in! They are there because they look good. All sorts of exhibitions and shows use the same girls. Next weekend they'll be at the NEC promoting some other male orientated product. I like them, but we never get them in the CTCRC! Times are probably changing a bit. The glamour girl thing is a bit "Old Hat" and I bet they cost a bit to hire too. So if the budgets get tighter the first thing on my list to chop would be the GGs

Just to follow up on all this I personally have an aesthetic appreciation of beautiful women and when I see a beautiful woman I think 'wow', I do not feel threatened or intimidated. There will always be someone more beautiful than us it's a fact of life!! I am also not offended by men making comments about the girls: it's all a bit of fun!

However, I don't agree with the girls looking cheap and slutty. Classy girls in classy yet sexy outfits is the way to go.

Photographers are going to take pictures of the girls in their branded clothing and these are going to be published on the web, in magazines etc. This is a fantastic form of advertising which I think many teams do not utilise enough.

I am very interested in the huge mixture of feelings towards grid-girls that have been expressed on this and other forums since my post! The supply of grid-girls is obviously my current livelihood and therefore to see that there may be a negative reaction to them by some motorsport enthusiasts is something for me to think about!
