They will have quite a few International competitors I imagine who will not be able to get into the UK with 14 days quarantine....

The provisional date for race 2 British GP is same as for the Festival.
Wonder which will take precedence?

The GP has just been confirmed on two consecutive weekends. So Goose's option 1 is - er - Goosed.

Who'd want to try and organise a major sporting event?

- Can't guarantee the date
- Can't guarantee whether it will even be allowed to go ahead
- Can't guarantee anyone will want to race, exhibit or spectate

What a nightmare. I so feel for them.

It is and what you have to do in this situation is to do things that are in your control. I an generalising here and not talking about the SC specifically.

Look at the elements...

Government guidance - out of your control
Progression of the virus - out of your control
Restrictions on International Travel - out of your control
Other events impacting on your event - out of your control

Under your control
Postponing - hoping for a date when some or all of the above may be favourable
Cancelling - judging that all of the above makes organising your event as you intended impossible/not viable and doing what you can to mitigate further costs.

What you can't do is watching your event date getting nearer and nearer and you as the organiser and some of the people involved accumulating more costs/commitment. Late in the day cancellations are the worst, so referring back to the SC I think to make their next call by the end of May is correct.

Many event organisers have already made this judgement for events that are into the future.

Now cancelled..

CANCELLATION OF THE 2020 SILVERSTONE CLASSIC

• World’s biggest classic motor racing festival is latest sporting event called off due to COVID-19
• Organisers vow to stage a belated 30th birthday party in 2021
• Ticket holders offered full refunds or option to roll-over for next summer

It is with a heavy heart that the organisers of the Silverstone Classic announce that this summer’s flagship three-day festival – originally scheduled for the weekend of 31 July to the 2 August – has sadly been cancelled.

As the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, the massive event always attracts unrivalled grids, many thousands of classic car owners and more than 100,000 visitors, many of whom camp out at Silverstone. The nature and scale of the event make running it in a safe, socially-distanced manner a huge challenge in the current situation; and the event’s much-loved family festival ethos also means that running the event behind closed doors isn’t a feasible option.

This summer, the pioneering Classic had massive plans to celebrate its milestone 30th birthday with a special ‘greatest hits’ racecard but organisers have indicated that they will carry forward these celebrations to the 2021 event.

“Following the latest Government advice we have reached the inevitable conclusion that we will need to cancel this year’s event,” said an enormously disappointed Nick Wigley, CEO of Classic organiser Goose Live Events. “Given the current circumstances and the unclear outlook on timescales, staging a postponed event – which was our original back-up plan – isn’t something we can plan for with any degree of certainty if we are to deliver the style of Classic that we all know and love.

“I can’t tell you how sad this news makes me feel. For the last 12 years it has been my life’s focus to build the Classic into the most amazing family friendly classic racing festival, the biggest – and many people think the best – in the world, but our priority at all times is the safety and wellbeing of those attending our events – as well as our own team – and we know that Classic fans will understand why this step has been necessary.

“As an independent events company passionate about what we do, we are so proud to have developed the Silverstone Classic into an internationally renowned historic motorsport festival enjoyed across generations of car enthusiasts, families, racing drivers and petrolheads.

“In times of difficulty, communities tend to come together and we’re incredibly grateful for everyone’s continued support. It means a lot. The passion of those coming through our gates is what makes the event the success that it has become and we are now already looking forward to celebrating our delayed 30th anniversary with everyone next year instead.”

The record numbers who have already purchased Super Early Bird and Early Bird tickets will be offered the option either of rolling over their tickets to the 2021 event or requesting a full refund.

All ticket holders will be contacted in June with details of the next steps. As ever all the latest information can be found at www.silverstoneclassic.com.

[Ends]

No surprise. The Classic can't survive on competitor's entry fees alone, large though they are. The event needs the ticket money and food/drink and retail fees to make their money.

We will be rolling our car club tickets over to 2021.

I think we will see a raft of other events that were originally 'postponed' now announcing cancellations and others not yet declared will be cancelled.

We are virtually into June and getting deeper into the main event part of the year and no one can see with enough confidence that we are going to move from the slow easing of restrictions back to 20,000 or 30,00 plus public attendance events in only 8 weeks or so from now.

I agree. I have paid for the FoS and Revival and can't see either of them going ahead with spectators.

Both would be cancelled rather than run behind closed doors. Which is what I expect to happen, sadly.

Silverstone Classic organisers have opened a crowd funding appeal for financial support called Support the Silverstone Classic. A far worthier and inclusive cause than Goodwood IMHO. I would hate to see this event disappear but response so far seems muted.

Perhaps some of the organisations that buy races from the event organiser and charge way over the top entry fees could be asked to contribute to the appeal thereby preserving their future moneymaking activities.

They are probably already licking their own wounds over the raft of other cancelled classic/historic events to contribute to someone elses...

Derwent is heading for a stewards' enquiry!
I don't have any sympathy and there are far more worthy things to donate to in the present circumstances. The various companies behind the Classic will have racked up millions since they took it on.
The last ten or more years have also seen the growth of commercial championships who buy grids and sell on the places. Again hugely profitable. The series I raced in got taken over and run for profit and now I can't afford to race.

I have loved the Classic for years, and always attended the full 3 days . I am happy for my 2020 ticket money to be retained for next year but I am not happy about being asked to prop up the organisation as if it were a charity. Like most of us I donate to a few, including Medecin sans Frontieres, and the idea of support up a hitherto profitable business by donation does not sit well with me .

I am amazed they did it (perhaps they saw Goodwood ask for'donations'?) as surely externally it looks like an act of desperation?

The extremely poor take up, only goes to cement the concept as a bad idea IMO.
