Ralt RT3 information?

I have just bought a Ralt RT3 as a project with the intention of sprints and hillclimbs. Has anyone got any technical information about the car or Toyota Novamotor thats in it? Also after a steering wheel and boss. Only things that are missing. Would anyone have any idea of history if I were to locate the chassis number? Dom

It's quite likely that the boss (I'm assuming it's got a removable wheel) is from Raceparts. Ron T frequently used parts from them. They also do steering wheels as well. Allen Brown might be able to help you with the history. Google "oldracingcars" for more info.

The HSCC have just announced that the Ralt RT3 will be eligible for Derek Bell races next season.

What model of side pods shall the Ralt RT3 1984 have to be eligable for HSCC?

Flat bottomed, but apart from that I'm not sure there are any restrictions.

If you fancy racing with the HSCC, give the office a call - you'll find them very friendly.

I have flat bottom side pods that was fitted to the RT3 1985 and it was raced 1985 with them. The outside shape of these flat bottom side pods are different from the 1984 original ground effect side pods. Will that be a problem as it says on the HSCC webpage and the 2012 regulations that "Side pods must be as original and may not be modified in any way..." and at the same time it shall be flat bottom?

Or shall the original ground effect side pods be modified by e.g. adding a hard marine plywood board, max 5 mm, underneath?

Classic F3 regs state the sidepods should be as original and with a flat bottom across the whole of the underside of the car as per the regs. A 1985 sidepod with flat bottom would be acceptable if no aerodynamic aids fitted. As original means without any aerodynamic profiling to get round flat bottom rule!

The problem with the 85 profile side pods, Richard, is that the rear is often cut away to achieve a "coke bottle" type of effect. The cars with these types of side pods have been refused FIA HTPs as they do not conform to the ruling that the side pod must be as original (1984). If there is any doubt I would submit photographs of the car before the event to ensure there are no nasty surprises.

Thanks for that Simon. I stand corrected. In that case we will insist on 1984 or earlier sidepods in all cases!

From memory - arent the 1985 side pods the same as the ones run by the DPR cars in the UK / France as standard in 1984? I remember they had made their own pods and a few other pieces - and made their own 85 FB kit to include these. If so - would they now be allowed as were raced in multi championships in 84?

Also - if anyone has an unloved RT3 sat in a barn with a Judd VW needing full restoration - please let me know! I know i have more chance of seeing pigs fly!!

As ever if the car was different to standard in 1984, or earlier, all you have to do is provide period evidence that your car was that way. Gerhard Berger's RT3 for example had slightly different side pods and the owner could give evidence, supporting magazine articles and photographs etc and it's good to go.

I have seen several incarnations of post 84 RT3 sidepods. Some are full length with a "coke bottle" rear whereas others are much shorter than the original pod with a completely different profile when viewed from the side. Being shorter, these are also obviously lighter.

From my reading of the UK regs, I am working under the belief that I have to run full length pods to a pre 85 design (dependant on the year of car) and to have the venturi tunnel rendered in-operable by the application of a full length / width flat bottom.

Am I looking out of the right window as I want to field a legal car, but not one that is running at a disadvantage to others in the field?

That's absolutely as I understand it Matthew, and the way the ruling has been read by the FIA for HTPs, certainly those issued within the last 18 months.

Thanks for that Simon. I was starting to get worried that I might have been building an un-necessarily uncompetitive car.

RT3 81

Hello,
I have bought a RT3 -81. Unfortunatly the chassie plate is missing, but I could read the build no of the monococue at the front bulk head. Anyone that has a clue of who to contact to connect those two numbers?

I have a memory of Intersport/ Mr Waters or RALT Italy/ Mr McArtny, invented a kit for the RT3 to fullfill the -85 regs?
