Dunlop Historic tyre supply problems?

On another forum a competitor has explained that he is experiencing difficulties getting the right tyres for his Imp.

Someone posted the following in reply,

"There are a lot of issues with reliable supplies of CR65 M and particularly L section historic since Dunlop switched production from Fort Dunlop to Portugal.."

I have no idea whether this right or not. Has anyone else experienced problems, are there alternative manufacturers of suitable tyres?

Yes, the matter was discussed on here and from memory even prompted a post from a man at Dunlop.

Supply is supposed to now be OK, but as I haven't had to buy any since March can't confirm personally! I did hear rumblings at Snetterton last weekend (from a competitor or two in the 3 hr), that they were 'hoping' tyres needed for the race would be delivered to the circuit, as they hadn't been at earlier events.

Sounds like even if production is now all OK, Dunlop may still have a lack of confidence among customers to overcome......

HP had definitely run out of 4.50 M 13 last week at Snetterton - I had the last pair and these were thanks to another customer reducing his order so that I could race. They were hoping to be restocked in about 2 weeks.

Didnt know that this had been discussed before, sorry, and it doesn't really affect me but in the spirit of using the forum more I thought I'd bring it up!

Not sure why Dunlop have a position of almost monopoly in the historic racing world, and if they are struggling to meet the needs of the sport then perhaps it's time to look for alternative suppliers. I know that the Clubmans Register approached Hancook and they now produce suitable alternatives.

HP Tyres tend to do a backlog of orders, normally taking about a week to come. Them and Longstones are most reliable

Understand the 19 inch tyres will not be available until end of year.

We are screwed as not much any good for pre war rallies on our cars.

some 15 inchers were not availabe in May
what you get is crap answers "due next week"
if course they dont turn up

My Mitter Junior races on 3 year old tires, thanx to Dunlop

I think the situation is a disgrace

Historic tire supply should be put to tender as whole or broken down into age groups

just look at how much better Avon performs compared to Dunlop

I still don't understand why Dunlop predominate in historic racing?

because Dunlop tires are made compulsory by the regulation of many historic race series

by the FIA for some such as Lurani / Formula Junior
and by the organisers for other race series

was a good idea while it worked
not a good idea anymore

put it out to tender

let manufacturers such as Avon or Blockley do a better job...

You get the crazy situation whereby Dunlop sponsor some of the historic races at say the Ring and due to non supply competitors get dispensation to run Avons which are better anyway!!

Yep, even when Dunlops are available in Germany they are allowed to run Avons at the Norschleife if it rains. Even though the race is sponsored by Dunlop.

What does that say!??
