Same could be said for Graham Hill to be fair

I have heard more than one 70s/80s GP driver state that Gilles's obsessive pursuit of being fastest everywhere and in every session would be the death of him . Every driver takes risks , but sometimes it looked like Gilles actively hunted them out .

I agree about Graham Hill - As a young man I was distraught he was killed but his carelessness and cavalier approach to flying did him no credit .

Gilles often pushed to the edge more because of the cars he drove. It’s a cliche, but no doubt true, that his drive in Jarama 81 showed he had the racing nous too

It was very well done, wasn't? Heartfelt stuff. That segment alone was worth my TV license for the year.

And in fairness Gilles was a very driven and slightly off kilter man at Zolder, the Imola stuff really annoyed him, both Pironi and the way Ferrari handled it.

So he was not himself as many journos at the time remember

Alboreto actually himself admitted he had a few near misses with other cars at the same corner Villeneuve crashed. Of course the qualifying rules at the time, with the limit on two qualifiers per session didn’t help either.
