Since they're only fifty or so pounds (DT P/N CAB 319) the cost of looking to save a few quid will be quite high ! Then there's the cost of carriage....

You only need a 1.75 ltr hand held to be Club level approved

In the last edition of Motorsports Now! they had the new rule changes for the Blue Book for 2005/2006. I can't lay my hands on said publication just now but I seem to recall that from 2006 all extinguishers have to be plumbed in, no matter what branch of the sport you are participating in. Perhaps someone else has read this and can give a definitive response? |

Hi
As you can guess by my sign in name i work in the fire industry What type of extingusher are you looking for Foam / Powder and does this have to be approved by the MSA or just the stanard range? Also when buying dont all ways go for the cheapest as if its foam then you need decent qualty product in it or it will not put out a fuel fire same for the powder other wise it's just a expensive peice of ballast. Let me know on the spec's and i can advise what you should be paying Cheers Marty |

===YES, it's 2.25 litres plumbed from Jan 2006 - and according to said publication it's due to the shortage of marshals!!! As an aside it's FIA harnesses too fromt he same date. All good business for the suppliers of course, and all in the name of safety. |

Got them both already. Don't forget if you've got a 1986 FIA race suit, that expires in December too.

Can anyone clarify re 'plumbed-in' whether this also applies to hill/sprint or just race - also Peter: is the overall change Dec 2004 or Dec 2005 - and for FIA or MSA events ? I thought old FIA were still OK for UK race events

I was told at Mallory that my suit expires in December. Already knew this and really don't know about the MSA regs because I consider Spa and any other european events to be the priority these days.

OK chaps, here we go!
Overalls first For racing: B S 6249 part 1 Index A or B (but not C) BSEN533 Pr EN533: 1995 Index 3 not acceptable with effect from 1 January 2005 For International use the FIA 1986 standard will not be acceptable with effect from 1 January 2005. All other events - unchanged Extinguishers J20.14.7 Vehicles of Period A to F be equipped with a fire extinguisher in accordance with Q.3.1.2(b) [Medium, Hand Operated, for discharge into both cockpit and engine compartment]. Other vehicles to be equipped with a fire extinguisher in accordance with Q 3.1.2 (a) [Medium, plumbed in, for discharge into both cockpit and engine compartment] The reason given for the change as regards extinguishers: "Increasingly the number of marshals stationed on post at race circuits is diminishing. It is thus considered appropraite for vehicles to be equipped with some basic "first aid" fire fighting capability. It is to be noted that most, if not all FIA formulae require vehicles to be equipped with fire extinguishers". "Note: recommended from 1 January 2005, mandatory from 1 January 2006" Hope this helps you all Sheila |

At last they recognise the diminshing number of us marshals out there! Just make sure you all know how to use the extinquishers properly as its pointless just having them because the rules say so. May I suggest that any interested drivers ask their clubs if they can come to any of the marshal's training day's that they organise. Part of the day is usually fire training. We marshals also would welcome drivers views on things too!

While doing a marshalling day at Snetterton this year the guys on my post referred to a tale about plumbed in extinguishers.
The storey went something like... A driver had a heavy impact with the barriers, was knocked out and the car caught fire. He obviously couldn't operate the fire extinguisher and the flames were preventing other drivers from getting to the driver to get him out. (they had stopped). The fire marshals were still on their way. The stopped drivers all had plumbed in systems and all they could do was watch the poor guy burn! If they had handheld systems then they could have got him out a few seconds earlier and saved him from injury. Makes you think, doesn't it... so what is safe? This worries me somewhat about making plumbed in systems mandatory... especially if the worry is there aren't enough marshals!! |

A similar tale involves a couple of classic cars (sorry, can't remember which), and the tunnel at Brands Hatch.
This was caught on camera - the car in front of the camera car caught fire just as it was going through the tunnel to the infield paddock at Brands. Obviously, there were no marshals in sight, but fortunately the car with the camera also carried a hand-held, and was able to get out and put the fire out quite rapidly for the other driver - who was more than a little relieved! |
