New GM/Opel/Vaux Eco-tec engine?

Has anyone heard, read or experienced the new global 2.2L 4 cylinder 16V engine of GM/Opel/Vauxhall? It is called the Eco-tec engine over here in North America and is rated at about 140hp. Just curious?

we've had Eco-tec's in Europe for a while in many different sizes. My dad had a 2 litre, never had any problem with it.

Not driven one, but the 2.2 four is supposed to be an excellent unit from roadtests etc. Common in the Vauxhall Vectra and Omega over here, and accordng to those who've driven both it's a much better engine than the 2.5 V6...

My company car is a 2.2 Holden/Opel Vectra (Holden badges - but it's made in Germany) station wagon with 2.2 16v four. I suspect that's the engine you are talking about. Nothing really special... pulls reasonably well from down low, so it's good if you're too lazy to change gears I guess!

Yeah, I've heard many good reviews about the Eco-tec too. So I guess from your responses, it seems like a reliable engine as well?

The new Saab 9-3 2.0 turbo uses the same 2.2 block but with different internals...

Does it really?

Blow me!

I've been looking at the new 9-3 on and off. Not sure I can justify the asking price for the Aero though, and - despite the rave reviews of the new car - I think I prefer the 9-5...

Have to say I'm a little concerned about the GM influence on Saab - trim fit & finish on the 9-3 seemed a little less than solid.

The Vectra and the Saab are effectively the same car. The GM finish has much improved in recent years, IMO.

The Vectra and Saab are very different cars. The Vectra is (very) roughly based on the platform developed by GM for the 9-3, but they're different wheelbase, different track and very different running gear.

Looking at a new Vectra recently, GM's finish has improved. But not to the level that Saab was and should be.

That said, full marks to GM and Saab for creating a compact exec car (in the 9-3) that shows the equivalent priced A4, 3 series and C Class up for being slow, boring, under-specced and over-priced.
