Tragic News: Mazda postpones LMP
According Autosport.com Mazda has postponed its projected Le Mans programme until at least 2005, on grounds of cost!!!
This is tragic....Le Mans without manufacturers??LeMans needs some factory support!! Last edited by SFonseca; 26 Nov 2002 at 16:42. |

I agree, although with the worldwide cash shortfall u can understand why they are holding back, at least for now. I woudnt mind betting that Audis decision to not race at Le Mans next year had something to do with cost, that and they have proved all they need to prove.

Have MG totally pulled the plug, or are they still going for a semi-works LMP675 team??

Why would Audi want to "return" (hell, they haven't even been "away" yet!), with Champion instead of Joest? Surely they don't think Champion can run the cars better than Joest?

No of course they dont. They just see it as a cheap alternative, and lets face it with the dominace they showed this year a works Audi UK team would still beat the other cars next year. Dont forget Audi still has 4 factory drivers on their books at the moment. Frank Beila, Tom Kristensen, Emanulle Pirro and Rinaldo Capello so it would make sense for them to put them to good use for one lsat year.

The $$$ are coming from Len Hunt and Audi N.A. so an American team, whose owner also sells a ton of road going Audis, is likely a better fit that Joest.
Besides, there is no reason to have to bring in the King Tigers when the Panther tanks will be more than enough to defeat the handful of Americans teams that will be racing in LMP next season. KM "The FIA GT is the best sportscar racing in the world." |

What we know.
Joest wants to campaign cars in 03', but will have neither works backing or as of yet the funding. I suppose they will require sponsorship for an effort, and might get one car. **Might** If so, look for them to get two of the factory drivers as a Thank You for what they have done for Audi. (Just my speculation only) Champion as Kurt has explained is the favoured NA son if you wish. Look for them to get the special status and the quicker of the two factory drivers. Perhaps they will even run two cars, and get all of the factory drivers.. It is a theory. Audi Sport UK/Arena motorsports would like to run LM. Audi Sport UK has no interest in the ALMS. Audi Sport UK's word is that Arena is free to obtain sponsorship to campaign the car if it wishes, but that will be without assistance. The question is does Gulf wish to put up the $ for the full year? Doubt it. Audi Sport Japan/Goh would like to run LM. I doubt that they will run anywhere else, and even so aren't as quick as these other folks anyway. |

Thanks Fogelhund - a good explanation for those of us not generally in the "know". Keep us up to date with developments - won't you?

With the Japanese love-affair with Le Mans, I'd be surprised if they skip Le Mans - providing they can find something worth running! |

Maybe so, maybe not. OK, Mazda won in '91, but even with the huge Nissan and Toyota efforts, they haven't really got close again. When was the last time a Japanese car really pushed for victory? |
