Damon should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Yay!!! A new all time record!!!

And stop the clocks...its Jan 11th and we have our first "why its Davids year" quote from Autosport and thats a record. They usually wait until at least February to tell us this:
"David Coulthard is more determined than ever to win his first World Championship title and prove his doubters wrong once and for all."

No, it'll be his year.
The Minardi will have made a mammoth improvement over the next 12 months!

Every single year as far as I can tell and with each passing year he makes himself look more and more stupid.

I don't think there ever WILL be a 'David' year, British magazines are just trying to hype us Brits up because he's the Brit in the best position to do well. But he won't, and we're gonna have to wait a while until we get a championship contender again (we have Wilson and Button getting there!!)

I am also of the opinion that David is going to have an even tougher time with Kimi this season, which I also suspect will be his last in the McLaren.

Here's hoping, and then perhaps they'll get someone with talent in the car. I hear JV's looking for a seat...

I don't see what the problem with DC saying "this is the year"

What would be the point if he came out and said every year 'no hope, I can't win' - that'd be a defeatist attitude, at least he is being optimistic. You can't win unless you tell yourself you can...

That said, I can't see it happening, but it's nice to keep positive.

I think there is a good chance JV could take DC's seat in 2004 if he and Kimi don't show the goods this year.

Doesn't it seem sad that drivers like Fisichella, Coultard, Barrichello, and Ralf all have secure seats in F1, despite having had race winning cars for many more seasons than Jacques, yet failing to chalk up as many wins as he (let alone a WDC) that it is Jacques who doesn't have a drive in F1??? Sad indeed.

Do you really believe that DC is that bad? I dont think he is a poor racer, he just lacks the edge that someone like MS has. I think he could do it unger the right circumstances. Yeah, the circumstances would have to be "more right" than for GF but I still think he is "good enough".

Yes, he says that every year. In fact I think the press just runs the same story every year now. Change the dates and the wording a little and thats it.

Yup, if Ron Dennis and Jacques can get over the deep personal grudge they've had for over a decade.

JV's going back to CART. Craig Pollack is going to announce his new Champcar team shortly, and no one's going to hire Jacques in F1 at the salary he demands.

Fisi's not someone you immediatly think of driving a McLaren, but he'll be on the market, and is highly rated throughout the paddock.

Meh. This old "Next [this] year is my year" canard has been attributed to DC, but no one has ever been able to point me to a quote of Coulthard actually uttering these words.

I'm waiting for someone to surprise me.

Ron Dennis apparently still doesn't get it.

Quote:
"There is no doubt Kimi is developing into an outstanding Formula One competitor with a great future," Dennis said. "By the same token David has responded to his presence in the team with precisely the balance that we would have expected from someone so seasoned in the ways of F1. It would have been disappointing if he had been comfortable with sometimes being out-qualified by his teammate. But he has certainly not been destabilised in any way by Kimi's presence. Under such circumstances it would have been easy for an experienced driver to lose his focus. But David has remained extremely composed all season and continued to perform to his customary high level."
Ron Dennis actually:

- made it to F1
- worked with DC up close for 7 years
- has access to DC's telemetry
- knows what DC contributes to his team
- knows what is going on in his team
- has a vested interest in McLaren success
- worked with many WDCs
- puts his money where his mouth his by paying DC millions of $ to drive his cars

I suggest that you should write to him (ron.dennis@mclaren.com) and explain to him that from the comfort of your armchair, you have managed to see that DC is a "w@nk3r" while he (along with Martin Whitmarsh, Norbert Haugh and Professor Hubble) miserably failed.

This is a pathetic thread.

Mclaren seem confident of closing the gap to Ferrari, so their drivers are therfore entitled to make posative noises. Calling DC a w***** is just pathetic. Grow up.

Yes - we are done calling drivers names like that thankyou. I have no problem with the topic (god knows every driver gets critism) but comments like that are not welcome on this forum, regardless of the driver.

You have got to admit that DC is a Good driver, you don't get to win 10 races if you're not good. What DC isn't is true WDC material, he'll always be beaten by a "star" driver over the course of a season. 1999 was his best chance to be champion and he was beaten not just by Mika, but by Irvine as well (this is not meant to infer that Eddie is a star driver).

As to DC being replaced, thats another matter. Look at it from McLaren's point of view, in Kimi they have another future star and in DC they have probably the best No2 driver in the championship at the moment. He knows the team and the way that they work, so why would they want JV who won't follow the company line and will probably only be around for another couple of years?

I'm beginning to believe that DC will stay at McLaren for another couple of years until Lewis Hamilton is ready to make the step up to F1
