Smokin' Jo hangs up his helmet
I have just seen on Dailysportscar.com that Smokin' Jo Winkelhock has announced his retirement. The guy is a legend in both Touring Cars and Sports Cars and will be sadly missed.

It's a shame he couldn't go out on a high - the last couple of years have not been what he is capable of. We say goodbye to a legend!

Oh no!
Smokin Jo is / was a legend! I'll never forget his days at Schnitzer in the BTCC in 1993 1994 and 1996. |

This is not quite correct. He will be a kind of ambassador for Opel Motorsport and during the pressconference they decided he will also drive in the DTM-taxi's during the DTM-events.

I think his form had started to fade in the last couple of years, and he's not a young guy anymore, so this might be the right time to go. He can look back quite proudly on what he's done, the only shame is that F1 didn't go well for him in 1989.

Shame, would had been nice if Smokin` Jo came back to the BTCC in a ETCC spec BMW...would had been exciting.
But I guess the last few seasons in the DTM have shown his age. |

The DTM just didn't work for him, but I'd have been interested to see what he could have done in the ETCC and if he could have revitalised himself. But farewell, Jockel. It's been fun.
