medical question?
Hi,
in december I had a bicycle accident (I have been hit by a car) and broken my thigh bone and my lover leg. Now I feel good and I'm back on my bicycle. I would like to ask you: should I expect any trouble to pass my medical exam to get my racing licence? |

Yes not nice having ones third leg broken Anyway the MSA wont care about your previous injuries unless your taking medication, have very bad eyesight, or have issues with an ECG test.

Not with my doctor, he normally asks me what the answers to the questions are! Damn, he's on a sabbatical this year, i'll have to look fit and healthy for a whole 10 mins!

Had my medical today, should be good for two years if i get my application in quickly for the 2013 licence!
A new doctor. He charged me £90 for the first time ever, up from £25 two years back, and for that I got full works for my medical record as well. "you're paying for 30 minutes, you may as well be here 30 minutes!" |

Would someone be so kind to answer some questions I have regarding the medical test?
What age does the medical test become mandatory before the ARDS test? How much (generalisation) will it cost? What does the test procedure involve? Thanks, Matt |

MJOnes,
Look on the MSA website - a copy of the application form is at http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/m..._comp_form.pdf Section 3 is the part your doctor must fill out. You should also read, and provide for the GP if they haven't done this before, the "Notes" on the application, in particular paras 9.1 and after, which are at: http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/m...ence_notes.pdf You'll get hard copy of these if you apply in the usual way. As indicated there, the doc will examine your heart, lungs (stethoscope stuff) and blood pressure, do a simple urine test with a test stick in a fresh sample (you may be able to bring one with you, ask the surgery, but what will you put it in?) and check your eyesight and that you aren't colour blind. They will answer the Qs about your medical history of epilepsy, any physical disablement or other problems that they think might prevent you doing motorsport. It's all very simple, and a worthwhile check anyway (esp. BP) if you are over 45 years. You have to have a medical when you make your first licence application, so your age then is irrelevant. If you are 45 or over, you need another every year thereafter. Cost? See previous contributions. 70-100 pounds? As said above takes half an hour, and that's what your doctor's time is worth. THis should bring it home what the NHS is worth to us all! John PS If your doctor is in any doubt that your wooden leg, glass eye or rubber teethmake you unsuitbale for motorsport, then you can ask him to refer you to the Medical Advisory Committee of the MSA. He will write, setting out his doubts, and you will be given an appointment to see an MSA doctor, for a definitive opinion. But worry not! There are many disabled people in motorsport - the MSA tries it's hardest to enable anyone to take part. J. PPS See Q 3a on the application - you do NOT need an electrocardiogram (ECG) unless you are over 45 AND want an International Licence (You don't, surely? Unless you are channelling Schumacher) Last edited by JohnD; 12 Mar 2012 at 18:34. |

Thanks very much for the information John! The annoying thing is that I have to fork out another however many pounds just to be told that I am in perfect condition!

How do you know you are "in perfect condition"?
There are no symptoms of hypertension! Until you have your stroke/heart attack. Look on it as insurance - you pay out on that every year, and rarely, if ever, claim. Treating high blood pressure can save your life, and the 'premium' will let you go motor racing as well! John |

Oh no, you are very much right John! Just as I am 17 I would hope to think that I would be in good condition. I read on the go-racing website and it said a medical is required for anyone over the age of 18. Is this old information?

I'm much more in favour of a medical than other taxes on motor sport like extra licences etc. At least I know the chap I'm going wheel to wheel with as healthy as can be assessed. (OK some may debate that, but it's not the point of this post)
Years back we used to sign our own medical declarations, and a guy I raced against had a heart attack and died while racing. Turned out he had a history of heart disease. So it's rudimentary, but a number of people I know have had something picked up at their licence medical. |

"18 or over"
So get that application in asap, young man, before your next birthday and save yourself a £100! John ( I don't know the country's going to the dogs, what with all these whippersnappers, coming into racing, taking all our races, wet behind the ears, they don't know their born. In my day it was hard, hard I tell you! Mumble, grumble) |

In the latest MSA news thing, the rule's being amended in that everyone racing must have a medical before their first licence, or if they're under 18 with a licence they must have a medical for the next one.
Something about not picking up serious illnesses in 14 year olds. |

Hi - in relation to some of the comments on cost I had my medical @ http://www.peachyhealth.co.uk/services.html in Milton Keynes last weekend for the grand total of £35.
If your riding a bike again, I am sure that's sufficient movement to pass the test I was given. ARDS Test booked for 7th April |

Bumping this (reasonably) old thread to once again recommend the services of Peachy Health (http://www.peachyhealth.co.uk/services.html) for MSA medicals. I've recommended two people to them over the last year - one had a small difficulty with his local doctor, and the other one was being overcharged.
I accompanied the last one on the day, and have to say they're lovely people, and Marios (not entirely sure how to spell that) was very professional. The medical was done in about 20 minutes, for £35, and at the weekend with short notice. They also know the ins-and-outs of the MSA medical form - which some doctors struggle with. Would recommend them very highly for anyone looking to have a medical for their MSA licence this year. |

Can anyone recommend a doctor to get my medical done in london central or london west / south west this week.
I have phoned round my local Doctors surgerys and they are all telling me I have to be registered with them (this didnt happen last time I had one done). Am I asking them for the wrong service? Can any doctor offer this basic medical? |

Thanks Tim, thats what I thought, each doctors practice I have spoken to (more than 6 now) have said they are NHS only and dont offer this and I would need to be registered with them.

I'm surprised that this still gets through the licencing dept.
H 10.1.1 says, about Car, Truck and Kart racing licences that the applicant must pass "a Medical Examination by their General Practitioner (GP)". Further references in the regs are to the "GP", meaning not Dr.A.N.Other but that person's own GP. The MSA must have written these regs in that way to avoid the unscrupulous or those mad-keen to keep racing, lying or just not telling a paddock doc about illnesses that could ban them, for good reason, that the GP would know about. It protects other drivers and the sport, so why do they not enforce it? John |

I used these earlier this year (at the Gainsborough branch) they have locations all over the country and for £48 I found them cheaper and easier than using my GP.
