Maybe they decided that it'd be better with only one manufacturer?

Superb news - this will guarantee that the 2006 IRL IndyCar season will be one of the hardest and closest in recent years.
I can't bloody wait |

One of the reasons why I liked it was because it didn't just have one engine, chassis, one of the things what the old Champ Car was, now it is a single engine spec series...like Champ Car.

Even if the result is a close series, it's not neccessarily ideal that Toyota has chosen to move on. Like many car manufacturers their interest seems to lie purely in F1 and NASCAR. At least the likely result is good racign for 2006.

I think being a spec engine is the best way forward for IndyCar - costs will be kept in check and the field will be more competitive.

Hopefully this will result in closer competition.
If Toyota wasn't planning on developing their engine any in 2006 (as stated in the article), then the IRL likely wanted to find a way to avoid having some teams with a massive power deficit. If both parties agree to end a contract they can end it. Toyota's lack of commitment would have given the IRL few good options other than having Honda supply the whole field. I don't want to turn this into a fight, but to me this is just one more thing that makes the lack of unification seem even stupider. Both series are spec series. This isn't so much out of their choice, but because of a lack of manufacturer interest. |

Kalkhoven and George have given up on "unification" some time ago.
Why can't we? Let's wish for World Peace while we're at it. I can't see how this is bad news for the IRL. Going with a spec engine will, as mentioned, bring more parity to the field. AGR will have their hands full with the likes of Penske and Ganassi. And maybe there will be a few wildcards? I wonder if Honda will permit in-house engine development? If they do, everybody had better watch out for The Captain. |

I think there will be no chance of that. The engine needs to be equal to all teams |

No surprise Toyota is leaving.
No mention so far that because the Honda engine is the only engine, that it will be a "spec" engine. The engine costs I don't believe will change. The big issue is the huge sound of manufacturer dollars being sucked out of the IRL. What is going to replace that? Budgets are not going to change much. It's public record AGR receives a $18 million a year stipend from Honda. With only Honda now, I can't see other teams being too pleased with the top guys receiving manufacturer support and them nothing. |

The question now should be, why don't IRL and Champcar merge? What is the difference between the two now apart from IRL is multi-chassis?

I don't think so. Poorer teams won't bother purchasing new chassis.

The Panoz isn't far off the Dallara, remember, it was only 2 years ago that the same Panoz chassis was the dominant chassis, tiny tweaks can make it top dog again. Not to mention that Penske, Ganassi, Rahal, and Fernandez all run Panoz chassis. The Dallara is far from the "must have" chassis simply because AGR ran it.

I don't see why some think the engines 'need' to be kept equal.
What is the negative of allowing the teams to 'work' on the engines themselves? Otherwise we are looking at a ChampCar copy, sending this division into even dumber territory............ |

That is how it was done in the early years of the Series, racer69.... Teams would get Chevy or Infiniti engines, and there were certain builders you would work with to tune and maintain them....Speedway Engines, Comptec, Roush, Brayton, and others....teams could choose their builder.... But Honda and Toyota didn't want people opening up their engines to see the particulars on the insides...so they set up the leasing and servicing agreements... |

Penske will put them in a tough spot, you know they're going to want to tinker with the engine, but if Honda says no, their only option is to leave the series.
