Historic F2
I recently acquired a Brabham BT40 F2 car from 1973. It currently has a 1600cc BDA on carbs in the back and FT200. I would like to run the car in the European Historic F2 championship but would prefer a 2litre engine.
According to one of my books the Brabham works team ran BT40's with BMW 2litre engines for a bit in 1973 but did a BT40 run with a Hart or BDG at that time? I have lots of spares to build a BDG but no BMW M12 parts, hence my question. Or if I have a choice of BDG or M12 which should I use? The BDG is lighter, less expensive but down on power, the M12 is sexual chocolate! any help would be appreciated. |

I own BT40-18 in Australia and have a fair knowledge of BT 40s . What chassis number is your car please ? There were only a few proper F2 cars most were Formula B for SCCA in the USA. Bryan Miller. |

Bit of a shot in the dark,but I have just purchased an Atlantic roller so need BDA+ ft2oo.If you decide to go BDG and want to sell your BDA please send me a pm.Good Luck.

Wasn't the BMW M12 limited to March chassis only in '73? I suspect the works BT40s ran with BDGs or similar.

MRD ran a Schnitzer BMW from about mid-season, having started with BDA power.

Hi Bryan, I have BT40-16 and BT41-32.
the Bt40-16 was imported into the States by Fred Opert and supplied to Earl “Doc” Hartley of the Drawn Metal Tube Company, Connecticut. McLaren bought the car with others in 1983 and it remained with them until Mike Campbell-Cole bought it in 2003. It has a Hart built BDA on carbs and FT200 and it's all in excellent original condition. The BT41-32 I also bought from Mike, which in recent years has been successfully raced in the UK, he think it came from Holland both cars have a lot of missing history. any help on recovering that history would be very appreciated. |

Hi, I may sell the BDA but not sure yet as I'm still unsure where I'm going with this. but regardless of all that I have spares to pretty much build another BDA (when I find time!) if you're interested and you would like "an engine built properly" let me know.

Original engine for BT40-16 would have been Brian Hart 416B Lotus Ford twin-cam on Lucas injection for the 1973 SCCA Formula B series .
Only in 1974 was the Cosworth BDD engine allowed for the series , most cars would have been updated , however BT40-18 wasn't updated 'till 1979. |

Hi Bryan, I've been in touch with Mike Campbell-Cole (the previous owner) and he has emails from Fred Opert showing he imported to the states BT40-16 in 1973 with the Hart built BDA1600cc on carbs.
I'm going down to North Yorkshire in the next couple of weeks to meet Mike to go through all the history he had on BT40-16 & BT41-32 and also to chew the fat on other racing stuff. I'll let you know the outcome. |

hi Bryan, do you have any knowledge on the Brabham BT41 F3 cars. I have BT41-32 from 1973. I've never seen or heard of another, I have no idea how many were made and where they are now. this one has a Renault Gordini 1600cc in the back but I understand that in 1973 it would have had a Lotus Twin Cam. any help would be appreciated.

Historic F2 is keen on original F2 cars, preferably with the same type of an engine a particular chassis ran in period.
The organisers are less keen on "menu-cars" that just get fitted with what seems to be the quickest combination. Aaaand before corona hit, the series had become very very successful and was in a position to pick what was wanted from the crop of entries Best reach out to the HSCC and ask the series coordinator for his opinion...
