I assume the unlapping cars will be free to go full noise as they pass the safety car. But what's the point? Now we have a group of (probably) slower cars, and in a few laps the faster pack is gonna be backing up behind them.
Might be a long day for the SC driver...

Couple of driver opinions are up on speedcafe.
Point has been made about the "buffer" of lapped cars between say 1st and 2nd being removed after working ontrack to pass those cars and creating that buffer.
But yeah, I'm more thinking how quickly the fast guys at the front will catch the slower cars and have to get passed them again. Not really fixing anything, only delaying the mix up of fast and slower drivers.

Not at Bathurst, because they would explode unfortunately! Hard tyres only for Bathurst due to the high loads.

I reckon they will be running hard from the moment they pass the SC to catch up as much as they can.
They are certainly not going to be continuing at SC speed, or even close to, once they are waved past.

How quickly will that happen though? What is the difference in lap time between a front runner and back marker in the series?
Given the other options, would they have been preferable:
Don't release the lapped cars, and be criticised for having them mixed with the faster cars on the re-start?
Release the lapped cars, but keep the rest of the field behind the SC for longer and be criticised for holding up racing?

Unfortunately with the counter-productive co-driver rules, all but the top teams with expensive co-drivers continually fall behind during green flag running...
That rule has been a huge flop IMO.

...also, I wonder at what stage the unlapping cars are permitted to race 'each other', assuming there is more than 1 car unlapping itself?

The rule stopped the teams running a second car with little or no chance of success.
The better co-drivers will always be spanned up by the better teams.

It was another rule introduced for the sake of introducing another rule..... kind of like this stupid new safety car rules giving the lapped cars a leg up....

Seems to be an unhealthy obsession to have everyone on the lead lap.
It's an enduro for crying out loud.
There's something amazing about coming from behind.
Think Larry and Russell in 1993
Or Chaz and the Dude in 2014

What a shame, the last bathurst for the official Holden Factory Team and no corporates, merch or many spectators...........I guess as many have said, we are lucky to have the race at all.

I still don't know how the 2014 one was allowed to stand, in what world can you work on the car under red flag conditions?

GRM have folded on their challenge about Herne. They literally didn't have a leg to stand on.
