There's a name for this: divorce! My Dad explained that it's hard to get used to the same girl every night and that nothing on earth prepares a man to stand noisy and stingy kids. Add to this a third wheel to a wonderful motorbike and you have a "Go fast and far away, Charly, look forward!".

Nice try John , but nobody seems to want to come in with all of the puns , such as " washing away the skid marks " etc .

Perhaps you were a bit too subtle .

EB I guess you can buy a second hand car of rental from Hertz for cheap money in your area. Did they have a "classics" division?

I don't think I would buy an ex hire car, I remember a certain team a few years ago that rented one so that they could "borrow" whatever spares they wanted for their race car in an endurance race

Yes, back in the day

From Wikipedia.

"In 1966, Hertz engaged racing and automotive designer Carroll Shelby to develop an exclusive version of his modified Ford Mustang.[53] The objective was to attract more customers to Hertz and the Hertz fleet would tempt car renters to buy a Mustang or a Shelby-Mustang.[54] One thousand GT350H Mustangs were built as rental cars, although urban legend also maintains that many were missing original engines when returned.[55] The "Rent-a-Racer" program was available in selected locations during the late 1960s for a limited time. The fleet has included Corvettes, Jaguar XK-Es, and AMC AMXs.[53] Hertz reintroduced the program in 2016.[56]"

With regard to the last sentence of the quote, this:

So presumably only classics before they became or become classics.

Something we won't see again soon, they have financial difficulties at least on the domestic market:

Yes you can by ex rental cars at auction, but I wouldnt want one.... I might get one I or one of my friends had rented.
As for renting classics, not from regular hire car companies, although you can rent high end modern cars if you are prepared to pay the high end rates plus the insurance costs and excesses.
There are some classic car rental specialists but mainly in the market for longer term (ie not weekend/daily) rentals for things like period TV shows and movie production.

We had a bloke specialized in second hand cars and I could put my hands on several buy-back cars, direct from the rental companies before they return to the car maker. I remember several Fiesta's all in the same color and several 505 Turbo, I could chose them amongst hundreds, they were cheap and covered by a guarantee. No issue. Bloke said " With 6000 miles on the odo and the clients we have, if something had to break it's already done!"

I know of at least one occasion where a team rented a Sierra Cosworth for the Will hire 24hr.Removed the half cage, bits of tape and body Schutz over the holes and sent back car next day. 😁
