I like the little A1. I like the bonnet vents. A nice nod to the Quattro.

Appears in Europe the Corolla name has been resurrected and we are losing Auris and Avensis models.

Corolla here is initially a 5dr hatch or wagon / tourer, to be joined by the sedan / saloon pictured. The last is based on the longer wheelbase wagon floor pan.

Not a bad looking car, but the Auris isn’t / wasn’t bad either. Won’t mention the Avensis!

Why is the engine compartment so long?

I had an Avensis as a hire car - it was competent. Utterly soulless but it did everything I needed it to. Agree the Auris is an ok looking car - never driven one though. It seems "soulless" and "competent" sum up most Toyotas.

That Mazda is to my eyes one of the ugliest vehicles I've set my eyes on. From every angle. The backend looks like an enormous fat backside, the windows are ridiculously small and the grille seems to be a 'mine is bigger than yours' exercise. Heck, I actually think the Nissan Juke looks good in comparison. Never thought I'd ever think that!

I agree about the rear end, but steady on- ‘Juke looks good in comparison’?

That car will never look good in comparison to anything! Well, maybe a Pontiac Aztec or Ssanyong Rodius......

Same MQB platform as the Polo and Ibiza, but 10 cm longer than a GOLF with wheelbase 12cm longer. (The Golf uses same platform.) Just shows you how clever these scalable platforms are nowadays......

That's not too bad. So that fits between the Fabia and the Rapid in the lineup? (or does it replace the Rapid?). One of those with 150bhp would be lively I'd have thought

It replaces Rapid, which never sold well except in it's native Czech Republic. Skoda decided that this was because the Rapid felt cheap and rattly, which it was. But it was also cheap to buy, and I think they're intending on nudging Scala up a few clicks on the price scale. In fairness it's a decent looking Hector, more modern platform and engines and a nice clean modern interior. If the price is right it should sell well.

I had a Rapid as a hire car in Switzerland - I was quite impressed with it - plenty of space and I was surprised by how adequate the 1.2 engine was, zipped up and down the Alps with no real bother. The interior was, as you say, a bit plasticky but on the whole it wasn't a bad car.

I agree they are decent little motors. It's a bit plastic, sound insulation lacking compared with others but it goes from A to B well enough. The little 3 cylinder 1 litre petrol that replaced the 1.2 litre 4 cylinder offered a bit more oooomph and refinement. The diesel was pretty noisy (but no worse than my current Alfa or any Ford)... I too drove one as a hire car for a month or two and it consistently returned over 70mpg. I thought about buying one. Then bought another Alfa... bad for me but addictive like drugs!

i thought it a bit odd that it was unveiled at CES...looks nice but aside from some bells with its entertainment system it doesnt seem to have much more in the way of new or innovative features.

just saw a quick video on it so could be wrong but didnt see anything about self driving, not electric, cant fly...doesnt seem very techy for a tech show.

I think manufacturers are always looking for an alternative to traditional car shows nowadays, which if nothing else are usually very costly to display at!

That CLA is certainly a looker compared with the previous A saloon (not difficult), but so is the new version of that. Sounds like in the UK we’re getting just pure petrol or diesel versions- no mild hybrids, hybrids or electric. I don’t think the platform is suitable to be electrified anyway.....

Good drag coefficient at 0.23 but the normal saloon boasts 0.22, which I think is best of any car on sale? Model 3 ‘only’ matches CLA.....
