Return of the Mc?
It seems that the world of motorsport moves in fast and mysterious ways.
A positive sighting in recent days of persons associated with the management team of one C.McLean have been spotted at FPR's expansive enclave, said to be deep in discussion with Mr Flint about a gig in the main series in 2005 and beyond. Could Mr McLean finally be given the gig he has deserved for so long??? With Mr Benson making sure the engines arent a problem any more, this could be one of the smarter moves of the offseason.... |

Dont get me wrong, Cam is a terrific steerer, but if you had close to an unlimited driver budget (due to CL leaving, he'd be the highest paid anyway) wouldn't you think a powerhouse such as FPR would be looking at someone a little bit more marketable with a tad more success, ie.. and for example ONLY - Bowe, Rat or possibly a GT.

Actually I would have thought the opposite, to put a quiet achiever in makes the most sense, to make the car the star and not the driver, to make the vehicle the focal point rather than the highly-paid megastar....
Having someone with the profile of Lowndes in the current car just highlights to the rest of the world how badly FPR run their team when it blows up in public and is a feature of most news bulletins in print and electronic. Take a lower profile, but equally capable driver into the picture and the results will come when they are warranted, and the pressure is somewhat relieved by not having to perform to impossible expectations each week. The growing pains can still happen in public.... |

Everything you say, GTR, is exactly right, but it's "live in QLD, work in MEL" saga again....!
Cam is under-rated and a hugely competent pedaller. I wish him well. |

I was told that David Besnard may be welcome back. Surely not?

Yeah hopefully surely not, doesn't seem to have the personality or flair of a lot of the other drivers,.. still not convinced of the talent either unless someone can convince me?

jimmycourier, are you referring to Besnard or McLean?
Regarding Besnard, there's no question of the raw talent. It's the brain wiring that's always been a bit hit and miss. I remember at a karting international in 95, Besnard was racing Jarno Trulli (among other stars) in a kart that was markedly inferior. Coming up to a slight-lift 90 degree left hander, where you really couldn't pass, and Dave flung it up the inside of Jarno, and pulled off one of the best passing moves of the weekend. The talent and speed is there. His performances in Aus & US Formula Ford and Formula Atlantic and even in 2002 in the SBR Falcon prove that. But his problem has always been - if the car isn't quite right, he overdrives it drastically and gets involved in accidents he shouldn't. Which means he probably isn't the right guy to be leading FPR next year. The team needs a 'Mark Webber', talented, good development driver that can drive hard, motivate a team and keep the car straight. Funnily enough, Craig was probably the right person, but you can understand why he left. |
