ALMS Rnd 7: Road America 18-20 Aug 2006
This is the weekend thread for Round 7 of the American LeMans Series, which takes place at historic Road America. The political B.S. revolving around the ballance of performance initiatives is in high gear. But hopefully that does not detract from the race weekend.
The track is fast and one of the longest road courses in North America. I'm very interested to see the differences between the R10s and the RS Spyders here. Dysons have a weight break and a bit more fuel, so we'll see how that shakes out. Penske have shuffled their driving order with the hopes of overtaking Intersport in the driver's championship. The Corvettes have successfully lobbied for some of the restrictions to be lifted. But I think this may be a bit of an Aston Martin track, so we'll see how that shakes out. GT2 is a crap shoot. Just a thought.
IF, as there is a rather slim field, and there is a lot of room on the track, the GT1 cars got into a real old fashioned Donohue vs Jones style-Either you move out of my way, or I will move you, type of shootout, and all the GT1 cars dnf. How would it be scored? A simple, no GT1 finishers, or some type of last man out? Bob |

If they complete 70% of race distance they score points
If not they don't If however they get involved in 'avoidable contact' then of course they could find themselves excluded - There's plenty enough of that in Touring cars nowadays! |

The last round showed they have the pace. |

I think Audi, it hasn't (quite) been enough to get Dyson ahead over a race. I've not sure they are so suited to this track compared to Portland. Allthough that may be false as Dyson was on pole at both Portland and Road America last year IIRC.

Early days, and Dyson always seem start slow, but doesn't the consistent pace of the RS Spyder, over a good few races now, show the Audi's diesel power/chassis advantage is not as massive as some would have us believe?
Especially as the RS Spyder, I have read, is not a particularly radical design, simply well executed. I guess we won't know for sure until Creation or Zytek show up in P1. Would also be interesting to see how RML/Rollcentre, and Van der Steur's Radical, with Devlin at the wheel, stack up to Porsche. |

Well that is my feeling JAG. Everyone is slamming the diesel advantage, but against what? A bunch of hybrids, P1 Lolas, and P1 Courages? All small outfits (yes, even Pescarolo is a small outfit).
Imagine a P1 RS Spyder and you can get a sense for where the playing field really is. |

IF the GT1s can run in their own little pack for most of the race, while the field is tiny, it could be interesting.
Having been there for the historics, I considered going to this race, but there just was not enough variety to make it worth the effort, but then thinking about the burgers and brats, makes me wish I had gone anyway. Bob Last edited by Bob Riebe; 19 Aug 2006 at 19:54. |

McNish was flying...broke the lap time record 2 or 3 times (I think) in the qually session.
I can understand Audi not liking changes to the regs, but I don't think they have much to worry about when all's said and done. |

The only reason why they are is for they don't dial back the diesel anymore and brings them back to the gas powered cars. |

Hopefully the Dyson duo can slipstream the Audis and make something of it.
I'm rather surprised that one of the former Dyson Lolas outqualified one of Dyson's new Lola's. Just to get the point across, the lead Audi qualified in IMSA GTP territory. |

It is even slower than the Porsche RS Spyder. No need to blame Audi and the regulations favoring diesels. |

It sounds like the Audis are extremely well dialled into Road America. As demonstrated by times and McNish enthusing about the cars set-up.

Weaver was desperate to get something from the first corner.

I don't understand such first corner moves in endurance racing.
