High Viz Jackets
We had a car at Zandvoort last weekend and the driver called in yesterday to say that the French and Dutch police are stopping cars and Motor Homes to make sure the driver has a High Viz jacket. I knew i have had to have one in the truck but did not know it was compulsory for private vehicals as well.

I thought for France it was from 1st July rather than now? I also think that the jackets need to be accessible from inside the vehicle rather than being kept in the boot.

Does that mean that all our Tin Tops and Future Classicsdrivers going to Croix have to have a H V jacket? Maybe the Club should get a job lot!

The jackets also have to comply with a certain EU standard - which I think means they have to have at least 2 reflective bands. Quote:

I think it got run over in the dark! My theory is a high viz jack doesn't normally adversely affect people but add a personal radio & then you can have a tyrant in the making |

when I did the 6 Hour in 05 one of the team had raced at Le Mans in Group C days and insisted on a drivers emergency pack gaffer taped to the inside of the car - torch, phone, high viz jacket and a pck of fags and a lighter. It was a sensible idea and I would definately suggest the same for any night race

They are dirt cheap I sell them in the shop cant do them for what Terry said (£1 each!) though as the cost me more than that but mine are the double banded good quality ones! It is only the waistcoat not a jacket and I think its a bloody good idea actually especially if you have to change a trailer tyre on the Motorway. Funny enough I think they must have this in America as well as the Chevy Blazer I own had one in the tool kit.

Its been the law in Spain for ages and most people leave them wrapped around the front seats. However the hire car firms don't even mention them and don't supply them with the car. Its a bit of an ambiguous rule as you only have to wear them if the roads don't have any lighting.
I personally don't know any tourist that have been done (YET) but the police have had a high profile lately and I missed (by luck) a breathalyzer last week ! |

This has been going on for a while now, see
http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65535 It is for every country over here as far as I know, only difference is that some want vests for all, some only for the driver. I got stopped a while ago on my way to Spa (German reg car, so they thought they were smart), the car full to the brim with marshal suits and hi vision jackets for marshals. What do they ask? Do I have a hi vision vest on board? With a big grin I merely pointed to the back of my car. |

On our recent trip to Assen, delta was amazed that, the first time we broke down, I had a High Viz jacket packed in my bag, ready for action.
I've always carried one on delta trips, ever since we broke down on the way back from Pau a couple of years ago. I didn't have one when we broke down on the way to Nurburgring, though... Or Cadwell... Or coming back from Cadwell a few years later... Carrying a High Viz jacket simply shows that you're prepared for the worst - it's the Kendal Mint Cake of Continental Touring. |

Maybe so,but if they sit in the car forever and never used at least at that money, they can be thrown away after use!

My understanding is that they become a legal requirement here (France) on 1 July. I bought a couple of vests in a local supermarket for the princely sum of 1 euro each a year or so ago. Never taken them out of the packet though, so no idea if they work!
