Very true. I just finished Damon Hill's autobiography and they really did him dirty.

He was still contracted to Williams for 2025.At the time he was in the frame for a Toro Rosso drive Williams attached big numbers to teams wanting to buy him out of that contract.
If Flavio has paid a substantial amount to get him I’m guessing he already has a clear plan to put him in for Doohan before the first European race.

If Newey stayed, Hill and DC would both likely have been retained and Villeneuve probably wouldn't have got a drive there.

I always thought Damon was quick but I didn't see him as an out and out ace. He made heavy weather of the prime opportunity he was given, albeit in very difficult circumstances. I think DC would have beaten him in '96 and '97.

There are an awful lot of what if's on the Willians driver front throughout the 90's!

Anyway back to topic and whilst I think Colapinto is a better prospect than Doohan, I am also fairly sure Martins is the quickest of the lot at Alpine. Thanks to ART's cock ups in F2 last year he's been put out to grass and that's it for his F1 chances!

I gather DC was already contracted to McLaren so would have gone anyway. But without Newey at Maclaren would the Hakinen / Raikonen era have happened and would Redbull with Vettel / Vestappen have happened at all - just talk but a real sliding doors moment when he moved on
