Air fields

Don't really know where to put this, but anyway:

Are there any airfields or similar in the midlands that are abandoned, or have a friendly owner that could be used for testing?

Not serious, going round all day stuff, just shake the car down and test systems etc.

Anyone any ideas? PM me if its SECRET!

You can (or used to be able to) rent the runway at Bruntingthorpe by the hour.

It was mentioned in an old issue of EVO.

See http://www.bruntingthorpe.com

Bruntingthorpe used to be £50/hr

Last time I used it was 1997

I have heard that it is possible to do shake downs on the runway at Abingdon which is no longer RAF, but an Army base. I have never tried it but I am told that the Station Commander is sypathetic to our cause.

Think they do mid-week test days - you need to speak to David Paterson the course secretary for more information. Sorry haven't got his phone number.

No, the David Paterson on this forum lives in Australia and races a Mazda himself. Would be a bit wierd for him to be a course manager for a sprint course in the UK as well.

Justin - I was told about the following (third hand info so don;t blame me!!)

The airfield next to Silverstone (the otherside of Syresham) you can hire - I think £20/hour - apparently the main runway you can hit the rev limiter in top in an F3 car and there is a perimeter road you can use. A lot of the teams use it to run in on..

It is called Turweston - have no idea who you contact - 01280 701167 OR 07802 895714 or turweston.co.uk - is the starting point....let me know how you get on.

Alternatively, I'm at Curborough on Saturday for the BARC Midlands Sprint if you haven't had any success with David Paterson's phone number I'll get it for you then. In fact I could make some enquiries and find out how much it costs etc etc if you like.

Although not an airfield, Llandow circuit in south Wales is popular with people running in and testing ect. Not sure exactly how much for a day there but i am sure its a lot cheaper than £50 per hour. Open all week too.

Anyone know of an Airfield or similar in Hertfordshire or Essex - Something like this could be the salvation of motorsport instead of the impossibly high costs now of the established circuits

Justin, Spoke to David Paterson on Saturday. He didn't want details of prices etc going out on this forum (or any other for that matter!) so I've PMd you.
