I understood the Brass Monkey was the pawnbroker's three ball sign that used to hang over their doors.

Nope, I'm afraid Andy is correct. Although pawnbrokers may have appropriated it
Talking of balls. The phrase balls out comes from the governor mechanism on steam engines, and not James Hunt's hobby. |

Wikipedia.
Hawsehole is a nautical term for a small hole in the hull of a ship through which hawsers may be passed.[1] It is also known as a cat hole.[2] In the (British) Royal Navy, an officer who had served as a seaman before being promoted was said to have "come in through the hawsehole".[3] No doubt referred too by his previous mates as a hawse hole. I rest my case. |

So the "all balls out" expression is not an insult or bad words. Just something like "WOT" or "pedal to the metal" or "flat out". May be better not use it in public tho…
Nice ref to sailors Le port de plaisance est un lieu conçu pour que les navigateurs qui ne prennent pas la mer puissent rencontrer des vacanciers qui n'ont pas de bateau. I like this one: Mieux vaut flotter sans grâce que couler en beauté. |

What a difference a week makes.
Last Wednesday we had a Formula E day, 17 degrees, no clouds, no wind, strong sunshine.. Today we had a Motorsports UK / ACU Test Day, 7 degrees, heavy cloud with rain showers all day and a 40 to 50 mph wind straight down the 2 straights. The main lake had white horses and often resembled the Severn Bore. Car wise we had 7 singles seaters: Richard Yeomans Crossle & Simon Clews Royale RP34 being my favourites. Joining them in the 'open pitlane' were Pete Edwards running in a 'new' mark 2 Escort, a 1959 Lotus 15 and a 'school' Renault Clio going out with a passenger. In the afternoon we had separate sessions for Solos & Sidecars, nothing quick (no Superbikes this time), but a 2 stroke sidecar caught my eye (and nose). |

In a way, similar to me, not having a race car these days, going to Phillip Island for the weekend to meet and chat to those who have / are racing cars this weekend allowing me to share the passion and atmosphere with them?

Confession. Not only have I never made a purchase in a certain patisserie previously discussed on here, but I’ve never been in a ‘Greggs’ either. They’re in the news today after record profits were announced, and during an interview I suddenly twigged that the CEO is a historic Morgan racer....... So as they are obviously doing all right without my custom, I will continue not to shop there!
Similarly, few years ago, when at a meeting with delta, I was introduced to one of his customers with a Historic Sports 2000. The car bore ’Specsavers’ stickers, and eventually it came to light that (at that time) he ‘was’ Specsavers.... Both obviously modest about their success, which isn’t always the case..... |

The CEO of Greggs is an extremely pleasant person, and it has only recently come to the attention of his fellow competitors in the Morgan Challenge, that he is the same chap who drives the big black V8 in Class 'A'. |

Unusual to see one with a full cage, I think. I would have thought a full cage would be more popular for both safety and chassis stiffness?

The former CEO of Serco, Chris Hyman, used to race in Formula Palmer-Audi and then in British GT.
Survived the Sept 11 attacks on World Trade Centre apparently :-0 |

Found an interesting online piece about Cadillac and cars built by Pininfarina for them, while reading the related article about a custom show winner. There is a ‘related article’ link on the page.... https://www.hagerty.com/articles-vid...or-pininfarina |

Two items in the news struck me as being polar opposites. Firstly, Volvo's announcement that from 2021, all their cars produced will be restricted to a maximum of 116 miles per hour. This is, they say, an effort to help reduce the death rate on the roads to zero.
The second item was that it is reported that Bugatti has sold the latest of the special editions that they recently made, La Voiture Noir, and it is believed that the purchaser is a member of the Porsche extended family, one of the Piëch family. The cost is reputed to be around £15 million, and the rumours are that it has a top speed of 266 mph. |
