Tracks near london....

Hey all. I'm off to university in London in September, and don't want to stop my marshalling. Just wondering which were the closest ( and easiest to get to) tracks near london??

Erm...Brands has to be closest...depends on what mode of transport your going to be using though as most circuits can be quite hard to get to on public transport.

Theres a couple of Brands' marshals use public transport to get to the circuit. AFAIK they don't actually own cars. They seem to have no problem getting a train to Swanley and then cabsharing.

O'k, so I was joking, but in reality Brands Hatch is the nearest. Just off the A20, with the M20 running very close. It is probably about 25 miles from the centre of London, as those proverbial crows fly. Nearest Railhead is either Longfield, or Swanley both equidistant from access gates, but virtually no Bus service to link with the Circuit - Taxi only alternative, or fold-up bicycle.
Longfield is probably best by bicycle as slightly nearer and the road is level. (No hills). Both Stations have direct access from Victoria (SE Trains).

Short circuit wise there's: Wimbledon short oval and Arena Essex just off the M25

I have ridden my bike to Brands from Swanley numerous times, it's about 25-30 mins up a bit of a hill each way. The only thing is the time you have to be there in the morning - do trains run then? (I'm not a marshal). Cab is about £10-15 each way.

Also Rye House for Karting, station is right next to the circuit and trains run into Liverpool Street.

You'll also have the two big meetings and a couple of rallies and sprints at Goodwood which is accessible by rain but a little further than Brands.

Castle Coombe, Thruxton, Snetterton, Gurston Down, Silverstone, Mallory and Donnington can all be done in a day from London but will require a car.

Wimbledon on a Sunday evening is a good night out - 10 minute walk from the tube (forget which station, but it's NOT best to use Wimbledon - somewhere down the District Line)

Wimbledon Park on the District Line (last stop before the terminus at Wimbledon) ... also Haydons Road on what used to be BR... IIRC they are both pretty similar distance away from the venue.

Not Ken! circuit closed in '72 before his time I think-good chap Ken-his GLC provided me with my first mortgage-when building society would not coperate
The Sprint held in the 90s was stopped by the Bromley council which CP comes under.
As to public transport to Brands-last time I tried was for the first A1GP-seem to remember problems getting a taxi back- about a dozen of us were waiting by the hotel-eventually a mini bus was found.
One reason I never became a marshal-no means of getting there in time for start of practice.
