On Board Camera

Im looking to hire some kind of on board camera for our next meeting at Cadwell in July. Does anyone know of anyone who supplies or hires out such equipment?

Don't do it. In my experience as soon as you put a camera in the car someone tries to bump you off the track!

You can buy a nice digital video camera for £300-ish and a really good mount for less than £100 - renting doesn't seem that good value...

My camera isn't much bigger than a cletched fist - the other alternative is to bolt the camera somewhere in the car and use a bullet cam on the rollhoop, etc. Again, a bulletcam is less than £100, so you are set up for less than £400...

I just received the weekly bumpf through my door from Lidl (cut price supermarkets) and on July 1st they will be selling pocket sized digital cameras with 112minutes recording time for £89.99...that looks like the perfect kind of thing to strap inside a roll cage or onto a roll over hoop.

Apparently the MPEG4 cameras do record a decent image, though not broadcast quality, they are ideal for emailing or serving from a website. They dont normally compensate for very dark/light days, and certainly don't allow fitment of additional lenses (ie fish eye for in car shots), but even so they do represent excellent VFM. And all you need is a friendly start line marshal to press the record button for you 8)

of course with 112 minutes available you could set it going as you leave assembly area
the spiel seem to suggest it was for viewing on a smaller screen but, as you say, for use on websites it would be ideal. I'm getting on and have asked Justin Dawkins to give it a try out for me at Mallory in August

Those Mpeg4 cameras are really only ok for good light and the quality is mediocre.I bought one to take Snowboarding and I ended up with lots of blur!

Used one of Nick Barnetts raceTV cameras this weekend at Brands Hatch - the quality was simply stunning. It was a really professional job with the bonus being I did not put it into the wall and managed to capture a rare event - namely me overtaking other cars.

Nicks quality is excellent and his service first rate (he some times has top totty assisant too)

He does it in his spare time though so rarley moves away from Brands and doesn't rent out kit.

did you too see the top totty assistant Justin.

If you want to rent kit gold star racing have started renting kit, pretty much the same as race.tv's kit.

Gavin, I captured quite a number of mishaps both during the race and the practise - my favourite was Chris Lewis's (? certainly one of the comtec cars) spin, I signalled him to come past me out of Druids during qualifying and he duly came past and then spun almost immediately as he turned into bottom bend - it was very gracefully done.

Darcym, Race-TV - Nick was excellent although no top totty for me...
Now that I have seen how good these systems are I am going to buy a Gold Star system as I saw these at the Historic racing show and the quality was fairly good although not a patch on the pro system that Nick installed. I assume that this is down to the quality of the Camcorder.

kickstart I've bought from Goldstar after using nick, and after getting the hang of setting it up (2 races) I would be happy to put me footage against nicks and challange you to tell the difference (I admit my first to attempts where not great) Ask Jon at Gold Star to talk you through the system I bought and see the demo footage he has of that system (or you can see mine) before you buy.

Nick was first rate, but for buying Jon was Uber helpful, although he did not supply top totty for my sessions.
