MG Rover Sport should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I'd have thought this topic would have received more interest than it has done. As such, here's a photo from a foggy MG Montego Turbo race which was part of the 1985 event - just to bump this topic to the top again!...

No problems at all VIVA GT - just look how quiet the Metro Turbo thread went, and now all of a sudden it's doubled it's page count!

I'll see what else I can find on the rallysprints to post.

OT : I had one of the last Rover Montego Contrymans - an excellent and highly under-rated car in my honest opinion. Eventually let me down with the Lucas electrics...

I had the 'pleasure' of running a Montego TD at one point as well.....

You guys know the James Bond 'smokescreen' button?

Well see if you can guess what i'm referring to.....

Bless, the old 80's Rovers really were thigs cars huh!!

Montego, Maestro,!! That diesel was the loudest engine on earth!! Can you remmebr it in a Sherpa, Chellenger tanks were quieter!

Pond did some amazing things in that River in GpA rallying, regualr top 5's behind the Mantas and Quattro's

For me the Rover rally things was good but not as good as the Welsh rallysprint, on a proper stage.

This was great TV though and should be repeated now with some top guys out there, seems sport had more imaginative people involved in it back then eh?

Be patient and download this, as it is a link to the full 1983 Rallysprint.
Hope it works OK for you.

That's a most welcome and most interesting link you've given us there 'Red' - I am very grateful indeed, as I cannot remember the last time I saw the 1983 event in full! Possibly 1983 I guess...

I managed to download the complete file whilst I went out for an hour, however when it gets to the end of the clip (after the Maestros have crossed the line), the commentary and film stops abruptly at 36.19 with an error message stating 'Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help.'

Is that where your clip finishes as well, or do I need to try and download it again?

Also, I wonder why Jimmy Mc Rae's run in the Rover wasn't shown? I know he was last over the rally stage so - without digging out the Motoring News report - all I can assume is that he had a problem?

Yes, same for me. No error message, but it stops as they cross the line.
excellent clip though!
I'd guess Jimmy stuffed one of them, without ploughing back through it again, all the later drives seem to be in 377, where earlier 378 and 379 were in use?

That's OK then mate, at least I've not downloaded it for nothing then! I don't suppose you have the same quality clip for the 1984 and 1985 events do you?

I've checked the clip again (and again, and again!) and by my reckoning Nigel Mansell and John Watson are in A379 VUK, and all of the other drivers are in A377 VUK except Jimmy McRae. The latter is the only one that is not shown in the clip.

I think it must be the 78 one I first went to. Rally stage on gravel track through the infield I seem to remember. Good day out and very relaxed. Just imagine the security if something similar was held now.

Talking of ARG cars, Rick Champion still has his Maestro challenge car when he competed back in the 80's

I recall seeing Mansell in a Triumph Acclaim doing the Autotest section on the start and finish straight at Donington. Quite a bit of it on 2 wheels as I remember it. I was impressed that the gearbox survived.

I have some shots of the earlier Texaco Rally Sprint but I'm not sure they are especially pertinent to this thread subject. Except maybe John Watson in the TR8 ...

I thought I had some of a later event or two as well but have not found any in recent years.

Just added some more to the Maestro.org thread above...

Does anyone have any photos or articles (e.g. magazine race reports) on the '83 MG Maestro 1600s, please? I'm doing some historical research into this event, and any info would be invaluable!

Would anyone be able to post up a programme of events from one of these rallysprints? I'm just curious as to how it was all organised! Also, does anything remain of the rally stage that was used at Donington park, as after watching the videos I can't really figure out where it is!

EDIT : Forget it, found the info on the maestro forum.

If anyone's interested, I have bought 3 back issues of magazines covering the 82 & 83 rally sprints (MOTORSPORT and AUTOSPORT etc.), with some good colour photos etc.
