Forty Years of RaceCam

Bathurst 2019 marked the 40th anniversary of Channel 7, introducing RaceCam to the viewing public.

It was all a bit revolutionary in the day, when we strapped ourselves to the couch and watched Peter Williamson throw the little Celica down the mountain to Forrest’s Elbow.

RaceCam has been carried by Dick Johnson, Peter Brock, Alan Grice, George Fury, Glen Seton along with PeriscopeCam on Jim Richards BMW

Always entertaining and great to watch drivers at work..

Possibly "Evolutionary" rather than "Revolutionary".

But a great achievement nonetheless.

As a youngster it used the annoy the heck out of me. Like kids with a new toy, the commentators showed it too often and sometimes forgot about covering the actual race...

While I am too young to have seen its debut, it was probably the biggest game changer in the broadcasting history of the race, apart from maybe the introduction of colour.

I remember we used to get delayed highlights of the race the following week, and when we saw what had been live in car footage, and then the commentators actually talking to the drivers while they raced we were completely amazed. You were way ahead of us on that one.

Even today, I'm staggered at the quality of live images from the hostile environment of a race car.

Some of the Drivers are actually quite nice people Wooley!!

Previous efforts to bring the action to the fans were a little diabolical though...

And the CBS camera used at the Daytona 500 in '79 was even more monstrous.

The set up used by Mike Hawthorn in practice at Le Mans in 1956 was pretty monstrous.... a mic on a steel plate strapped to his chest, camera gear in the 'passenger' side of the D-Type and a huge camera mounted on a pole at the rear of the car.

on board lap with Mikes commentary here: https://www.snotr.com/video/18925/On..._D-type_Jaguar

Cameras in cars had been done before but channel 7 took it a new high with live transmission and two way audio.....that was revolutionary as no one had done it before. IIRC they were then asked to do it in the US for a race possibly Daytona but I might be wrong on that.

And of course talking to drivers as well from the commentary box. I think DJ was one they tended to talk to a lot

The Channel 7 system was first used at Daytona in 1981.

Prior to that CBS had used their own somewhat inferior system.

'Back in the day' we hired a (huge at the time) portable VHS recorder for the weekend as a mate was getting married. Then on the Sunday we went out recording ourselves racing around in our road cars repeatedly saying "We're on Race Cam" in a very poor Australian accent after first seeing it from Bathurst!
VIVA GT is online now
