Amaroo Park should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
They had some good stuff in it, just shame most of those publications have now gone by the wayside

Circuit Length: 3.2 km
Race Distance: 40 laps (90 laps scheduled, race duration reduced due to multi-car accident during first start)
Weather: Overcast and rainy

Heavy rains overnight had left the Surfers circuit well and truly waterlogged, including flooding the storm water drains around the circuit which forced the cancellation of supporting open-wheel races. More rain a few laps in mixed with oil left by the Davidson/Kramer Mustang caused over 2/3rds of the field to slip off into the ditch on the outside of Ipec corner. Greville Arnel was taken to hospital with neck injuries after Bond's Alfa slammed into his parked Starion as Arnel was getting out of the car. The carnage left Terry Finnigan leading John Smith; both had gone off in the oil and water but had somehow avoided getting stuck. The race was eventually stopped and completely restarted an hour later but without Brock and Harvey, both of whom had already caught a plane back to Melbourne! Skippy Parsons would take the wheel of the #7 Commodore.

Only 14 cars would take the restart, eventually won by Richards from O'Brien and Johnson. The Mustang led early before dropping back with tyres woes caused by a differential damaged in the carnage earlier, while bent suspension, also from the crash, meant O'Brien couldn't quite chase down Richards.

You are missing the Kevin Clark Mustang that made it's debut in this race. It didn't crash in the first part but got knocked off by Dick in the second part. (I think Dick wanted to sell Kevin his 83 panels)

ART Racing should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1985 Cars

Just a quick correction - the Ken Harrison Escort, which I bought off Ken after its Group A days, was not a 1600i but was his ex Group C Mk 2 Escort running as a Group A Mk 2 Escort Mexico, which has the 1600 Pinto engine. I suspect it is the only Group A Mk 2 Escort ever raced. Car is still around, running in historic Group C in its 1979 livery.

Quotet from William Dale Jr. A few numbers, change of class for Minear and six entries supposedly never made it to Winton. I'm wondering why Winton would have to wait till 1988, before being allocated a round of the ATCC again - or was it the organizers that decided to miss the ATCC?

I'm looking for team principals as well, and would like to know who would be considered for the following two teams:
Toyota Team Australia - Tony Niovanni?
Network Alfa - ?

I notice Ron Dickson was down as a non entry in a Rover. Wonder what the story was behins this one? A TWR car that never came off perhaps?

I think the Alfa Manager was one Enrico Zenarini (sp?) who later went onto manage Giancarlo Fisichella?

Quoted from William Dale Jr. To my reckoning this was the first time TTA had two Toyota Corollas on the grid. So far John Smith had been driving the 3-door Coupé seen at Bathurst '84. This car was now in the hands of Drew Price, while Smith debuted a new 2-door sedan/coupé.

Sorry, forgot to put some words to that entry. From Australian Motor Racing Year 1985/86 this was to have been one of the TWR Vitesses from Bathurst '84, but soon after the Winton round it was know that this car was back in Europe, for the ETCC.

Forgotten that name, but sure he was still around with Colin Bond when he graduated to the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth later in the decade. Actually found him as Enrico Zanarini.

Quoted from William Dale Jr. AMRY 1985/86 seems to have messed the results for this race completely. They have Peter Brock as the race winner after a 25 lap distance, but if you read the race report, Jim Richards was the winner by 1.9 seconds from Robbie Francevic with Brock third. I think the results I have added might come from the wikipedia site or a points table. Strangely the enduro race at Surfers later in the year also seems to suffer from messed up results.

Forgotten that name, but sure he was still around with Colin Bond when he graduated to the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth later in the decade. Actually found him as Enrico Zanarini.

Shame that Rover deal never materialised, it would've been a very competitive proposition against what was generally speaking quite a weak entry, in terms of depth, if not quality. The Tim Slako Rover managed to run well as selected events and there is little doubt, based on their relative performances in the 1984 BTCC, that a TWR car would've been quicker than the already quite elderly ex Patrick/Rouse car that Slako had bought from Sawyer-Hoare.

It was good to see the numbers swell as the season wore on with numerous people debuting Commodore's and the other cars like 635's sourced from Europe and NZ I think?

Cheers for the spelling correction on Enrico's surname as well Jesper.

There used to be a ½hour+ clip of this race on YouTube, alas no longer. I also have Alan Jones (Alfa Romeo) and Kevin Bartlett (Mitsubishi) as DNSs at this race, but neither mentioned in the AMRY race report as to why they failed to start or how they qualified. Winton hosted the penultimate round of the 1986 ATCC, won by Jim Richards (after Gary Scott was disqualified)

Winton wanted a round for 1987, but CAMS reduced the number of rounds and Wintom missed out. They did get the opening round of the 2-Litre ATCC though that year.

They got their round back in 1988 after Surfers Paradise was closed at the end of 1987.

Interesting to hear there were 17 starters... that would be the biggest AMSCAR grid since 1982

Why was there only 2 standalone AMSCAR rounds in 1985. In previous years the AMSCAR Series had been a standalone 4 round series.. In 1985 they obviously got an ATCC race for the first time since 1978 which took up one date. The Better Brakes 300 was run as rd4 (and doubled as the AEC opener), but in previous the years the 300 didn't count for the AMSCAR series.

I think Zanarini left the Australian motorsport scene when Bond left for the Sierra, as Enrico was an Alfa Romeo employee. He was quite involved in motorsport, he'd been behind the Alfasud one-make PRO/Am series that had been run in 1983 and (infamously) 1984

Richards definatly wins from Francevic, the tape doesn't lie ;-) Run in cloudy conditions with rain threatening throughout.

Also as a matter of interest, $25,000 was put up for who got pole.

According the "The Chequered Flag" magazine in early 1985, Dickson talks of running the two Bathurst cars in a full ATCC & AMSCAR campaign, complete with a rotation of works TWR drivers!

He also says that Mobil leaving to go to Brock wouldn't change any of their plans

As you say a big shame they didn't run

Neither driver would have turned up.

Jones had his last ATCC race for Alfa at Surfers as intended, as after that he was on his way back to Europe to run F1 with Haas/Beatrice/Lola (whichever )

Mitsubishi had withdrawn from the series due to poor results and wanting to do some development for the enduro's

Thats correct.

The car was plain white, running as #27. It was the ex-Bond car from earlier in the year (when Jones left, Bond took over his Luigi-built car)

Allan Grice would drive this car in the Better Brakes 300 at Amaroo, & Bond would later run this car at the Adelaide AGP support race after the Luigi car was written off the previous weekend at the Surfers AEC round, and 'Captain' Peter Janson would also use the 'Toy Shop' Alfa in a rallysprint.

Quoted from William Dale Jr. I have notes of second drivers on some cars. Please remark the ? in those cases. One particular case I'm especially curious of is the Peter McLeod and Barry Jones Commodores. According to my notes Jones raced with McLeod in this race, but Williams record shows the two drivers in separate cars. I have a note saying 15 Commodores raced at Oran Park and if I fill in my blanck spaces with the record of William Dale Jr., I end up with drivers for all 15! ..but with Barry Jones racing two cars!?

Is that right? Crikey that's interesting Jesper.

He must've been one of the most successful pedallers not to like the category during its time though! Twice Bathurst winner and pretty much always a front runner when he competed whether at home or in Europe.

Wonder what he could've achieved if he did like it!!

I would venture that had he come to Europe earlier (or for longer) he would certainly have racked up some wins whether in a Commodore or latterly with the Nissan.

With Grice i think it was more he didn't really see the need to drop Group C. Also in early 1985 he was heavily involved in the running of the ARDC, had opened up a new business on the Central Coast, and also had a minor fishing accident.

He was just mainly hanging back and waiting to see the lie of the land with Group A before deciding what to do. With the chance to go to Europe, i think his interest was raised.

His team, Roadways, also adopted a wait and see approach, they helped out with the Mark Petch Volvo during the season as well as converting and building some Group A VK's, the Bathurst effort was done in conjunction with Warren Cullen's team as well. His main 1985 racing amounted to just the Nissan-backed Pulsar ET series (won by Jim Richards)
