TheKing should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
GTR2 - Motec

Ive recently started playing GTR2 but now want to start looking at the data in Motec.

I have downloaded the Motec software and looked at the pdf which explains how to get started. However im still at a loss!

Although I have data aquisition selected in the options-->advanced menu it never seems to log the data once on track.

Is there anyone who could run me through getting it to work?

You really need the analysis sample Motec project, available from Blimey! Games' website. It will help you make sense of it all!

Get the guide as well. Unless that's what you've already got. The guide on that download link actually tells you how to get acquisition running correctly - you'll probably have to edit your PLR file.

Yes Sam, GTR2 logs data in a MoTeC compatible format, for use with their i2 Pro Analyser package, which is free to download.

Yeh I got both of them files. Ill go and re-read it and try get it working!

I understand the analysis as Ive used Motec software in the "real world." Just having trouble understanding the link between logging in the game and Motec

so in thoery you could use the computer game data to compare with real world - wonder how realistic it is?

According to the developers, it's quite realistic. Down to the bumps in the road. There may be some argument as to the physics of the cars or the tires, but when the developers use GPS to build the tracks and MoTec data from the actual FIA GT teams themselves for additional coding, you gotta think they're pretty close to being spot on.

I've heard rumour that one of the Porsche teams compared their data with that of GTR2 and found it to be very comparable. Not sure about any other cars though, as not many teams are willing to part with MoTeC data.

Mr. TheKing, have a look at http://www.schuerkamp.de/zope/gtr2rank/ - check out the list of times for Donington. Ignore the really quick times - they're probably mistakes/cheaters.

The way i got my data to log, was by downloading motec (i think i got the pro one, im not sure)

To get my data to log, there is a line in the PLR file i think, vaguely remember it as something about motec location, and i put in the location of where my software was, and it did it.

Sorry i'm not much help, i'll have a look later on at my PLR file, and you can see if yours is something similar.

Yeh I looked more closely at the pdf file Chris put up and its not difficult to set up..

Just done a 1.01.6 round Donnington National with Ferrari 550 (Keyboard). Whats other ppl done??

I'm in the low 1 minutes too, i think, i haven't played it in a while. Hopefully when i get a wheel, i can bring down my times.

Exactly my situation, i'm not sure how much longer i can cope with trying to brake and accelerate properly with a mouse.

Buy a cheaper wheel then, if you can't afford the G25. I have a Momo Racing (black), and DFPs are still very popular. There's some on eBay, check out:

I did have a Thrustmaster something-or-other beforehand, but that was not force-feedback, so really comparing the two of them would be like comparing a kart:



to a kart:



I.e. similar in name and basic functionality, and that's about it!

The actual Momo wheel (ignoring the pedals for the moment) is brilliant - really nice chunky wheel, rubberised coating so you don't slip off it, 6 buttons on the front for your automated threatening behaviour (chat macros), 2 paddles behind the wheel, and a sequential shifter. It's really well made, robust, and clamps to the desk well. In those respects, it's much better than many of the other similarly priced wheels, like any of the Thrustmaster offerings or the MS Sidewinder. Force feedback is good - sometimes a little too good! Again, better feedback than the sidewinder and the TM stuff.

However, what lets it down slightly is the pedal box. Like many (reasonably) cheap wheels (i.e compared to a BRD wheel/pedals or the G25) it comes with 2 plastic pedals in a box with 2 pots (potentiometers). The springs on the brake pedal aren't nearly good enough to give you the proper 'race car brake' feel, but then again that's a bit of a nit-pick because I'm used to the real thing. Most folks who just sim-race find them ok. If you're unlucky, the pots might wriggle free in their mounts, and that can lead some people to moan on forums about the pedals 'spiking' or not giving them the full range. Fortunately there's something you can do about it - depending on the seriousness of the problem, you can put a dab of superglue on the pot-mounts, download better drivers for the wheel (which compensate for the spiking) or both.

Concerning the DFP, it's a little like the MOMO, except there's a 4-way 'hat' on the wheel, and you can actually set the amount of rotation you get with the wheel through the software. This makes it good for tin-top or GT racing, as you can get a lot more lock than just the 270 degrees that the MOMO has. Build quality is similar to the MOMO, and the pedals are a little better, so I'm told, but I couldn't give you an objective assessment, since I've never laid eyes on one, save for photos.

Basically, I'd recommend you get a MOMO or a DFP. If it were me, I'd try and get my hands on the DFP, as that's what most people have, but don't be afraid to go for a MOMO if that's all you can afford/get. They're really good wheels - mine's had a 3/4 year life so far, and only has a little slop in the gearing. Pedals are fine.

For a relative 'beginner', I wouldn't bother with the G25. Ok, so you can use the shifter in H-pattern mode, but to be honest, I think you'll have enough problems with the sequntial shifter or the paddles. It's quite a bit different to using the mouse or keyboard. When I moved over to force-feedback from my old TM wheel, it took me absolutely ages to get used to it, and I was dead slow for months because I was coping with the extra forces from the wheel.

The G25 also suffers from a lack of buttons on the wheel itself, and the wheel is quite thin. In that respect the MOMO/DFP is much better as you get a chunky rubbery wheel that you can really grab hold of.

Also, plenty of people are having trouble getting the G25 setup correctly for certain games. They complain of weak feedback and over-sensitivity. In most games, there's automatic settings for the MOMO/DFP, so you just click a button and it feels about 'right'. With the G25, you'll need to do an awful lot of fiddling to get the feel you want - of course, this is generally only a problem if you're moving from another wheel to the G25, but the point still stands.

So, bottom line - in my opinion, you should forget the G25 and get a MOMO / DFP from eBay. Both of you

My DFP's been in constant use since GT4 was released a good few years back, it's never missed a beat, feels solid, and is very responsive.

Very strong force feedback and 900 degree rotation.

Used for rFactor and GTR2 these days.

Had my DFP for about a year and used extensively on GT4, now on LFS. Would be great to have feedback in the brake pedal, but other than that it's great.
