In the 60's Luanda had a street circuit, they used to qualify early hours of the morning to avoid the heat,a race for the winter springbok sporstcar series was held there but most cars overheated in the race! I think the circuit was also known as Nova Lisboa.
A 2.4 circuit at Benguela also existed, civil war meant their decline and there has been no return since the 60's. |

Correction:link is correct but took me several attempts. Now the system will not let me edit my post after 10mins,having previously refused to delete it which was the reason for the cryptic 'delete' post!
Suggest you type more carefully NKT. |

Well, I actually raced a Lotus 47 at Luanda in 1970 (might have been 71, memory failure). I also hill climbed the darned thing in Cabinda - again 70 / 71. In both instances we took the cars by road from Kinshasa, our little team included a Gold Leaf Elan, a Cooper S, a Lotus Cortina and a couple of others I don't recall - and we had to negotiate our way across the war zone, all very civilised, just needed lots pf US$$$$$ and a fair amount of sang froid.

And there is more - If I remember well (and I generally don't) the 1965 event had the amazing scene of a temporary foot bridge colapsing across the main straight - and the race continued, simply slowed down to drive around people & scaffolding while the organisors sorted the mess out!

More memories - photo of the Huambo tracj inauguration - that looks like MY Lotus 47 - but I don't remember actually racing there (and I can't have been that drunk), so think that was after I sold it to a young portuguese guy (which I did in 72, but thought it was later than May)- and the Elan following it is definately the one that also came from Kinshasa.. Am I old or what!
