Information Sharing in A1GP

I know they want all cars to be equal, but for god sake!!!!

"A1GP series bosses hope to bring the teams in the second half of the grid closer to the front running pace by making the telemetry from the fastest lap of each practice and qualifying session available to every team.
The sporting regulations for the coming season revealed that data showing the throttle angle, brake pedal pressure, and steering angle will be shared with the entire grid, allowing slower teams and drivers to see where they are losing out.
While the full telemetry will not be shared out, it is expected that the information that is circulated will help everyone, but particularly the teams from developing motorsport nations, to get nearer to the pace at the front of the grid."

What is going on in motorsport today??? No wonder engineers in F1 get paid so much. its because they are in short supply, since feeder series like A1GP, GP2 and F2 it sounds like, does not create fully rounded engineers.

Why isn't F3 more popular, at least that is a proper racing series, even if it is dominated by Dallara........ COME ON YOU MYGALES!!!!

It's hardly in-depth telemetry that they'll be sharing; and I doubt it will particularly help the back of the grid teams. All this will show is that the faster driver was able to get on the throttle earlier and brake later, and were thus quicker over the course of a lap. The reason why they could brake later and accelerate earlier is because they were more confident in the car and it was setup better - telling the teams at the back of the grid they need a) a more efficient car setup and/or b) a better driver. Which they probably know already.

Maybe it would be better to share the setup information then, given that it's supposed to be nation against nation, which isn't exactly the case with the teams running the cars.

Very basic data which is sometimes revealed graphically on TV in both F1 and A1GP anyway. It will reveal where the car was fast without revealing how. May reveal some pointers to the more inexperienced drivers. I doubt it would reveal much to the engineers except confirm what they already know. Though it might occasionally be useful to teams who are setting up the car in the 'wrong' direction. Then again set up is such a black art that 'wrong' may actually turn out to be better than 'right', if it all comes together. So would the data revealed be helpful? Who knows!

Teams who 'twin' have tried identical set ups and yet some how perform differently. Especially true where drivers have different driving styles

I can see some of this information leading to incidents for the more inexperienced driver.

Well if he can get around that corner at 80% throttle so can I .... Red flag and a trip to the medical centre later suggests he could but you can't.

If he didn't brake until that late then I can wait until then too

A novel idea. The A1GP grid is pretty close as it is compared to some series, but if this helps bring the slower cars even nearer the pace then im all for it. It will only help improve the racing.

I get the feeling around forums at the moment, that alot of people are expecting this season to be a bit of a farce. What with a new car etc, and the pre-season problems/general lack of testing.

problem is more or less that from the moment we knew that Ferrari was going to be involved untill the very first image has appeared, 7 months have passed.. 7 months they could have used on building the cars, testing them extensively and producing them so that the cars would have been ready for the now cancelled Silverstone test.

It's not that the car is a completely new design and all, or the engine is completely new..

At this stage it's probably even doubtfull weather there will be 23some A1GP Ferraris at the start in Mugello... So hopefully for A1 or Ferrari, not too many countries want to join suddenly.

The problem is not Ferrari.

Ferrari doesn´t made the tub.

Ferrari doesn´t made the engine.

The problem is the A1 Style and the organisators. They have tested a lot with the lab car and do a lot of hours at wind tunnel.

At the moment they are building the second lab car , and there are teams without car . . . .

These are the problems and No Ferrari.

i thought ferrari had developed both car and chassis i thought the car was based of the f1 ferrari of 2004 but maybe im wrong.But im pretty sure they build the engine since its called a1gp powered by ferarri.From what ive seen on the a1gp site ferrari makes everything and the teams just put it together.

The car is being assembled down on the southcoast by A1GP Technologies (Arena Motorsport and Grand Prix Electronics I think).

It has been done several other places in other series, and I know for a fact that it actually does make a difference. It should shape up the field, and narrow down the space between first and last.

If a driver is not capable, showing him where he is lossing time will not make him quicker. It will identify where he needs to find time, which will mean he may not overdrive in other area's and can concentrate on the areas he is slower..I think it will be a bigger advantage to drivers already close to the pace..

Right..... allmost forgot Ferrari never does anything wrong

Seriously: Ferrari has been contracted by A1 to design the car and build the engines. And Ferrari, in their wisdom, decided to wait for 7 months for whatever reason to actually start to do something productive.

It's not a completely new car, nor a completely new engine.. the only thing that is new is that those 2 need to work together now..

The redesign is John Travis´s job , not Ferrari .

It won't make any difference, maybe even make it worse from some.

As some have already stated, you can't just read someone elses data and do it.
You can't even just adopt someone elses setup.

Different drivers like different things.

A1 is still a little bit more the engineer than the driver. If the engineer gets it right then the driver looks great.

That's why you see teams that are podium one week and 12th the next.

It's also the reality of motorsport. The driver is only as good as his engineer (and the relationship he has with his engineer)
