Spoiler Alert For those following Line of Duty but haven't yet seen the finale, please avert your eyes I watched the last in the current series last night, and have to say that this was, in my opinion, the weakest of them all. The ending was like a damp squib, and felt to me as though the writer and director had run out of steam and ideas. It certainly felt as if this might be the very end of the line for it, even though it achieved a record number of viewers, so it could be said that it was going out on a high.
The only point of excitement in the programme last evening was when the van carrying the female detective went under the underpass and was stopped by the baddies, but even that wasn't all that great. Great shame because I have enjoyed all the past series immensely. |

Agreed very disappointing and unbelievable (well, even more unbelievable than normal) and has all the hall marks of setting the scene for another series, sadly.

I agree. It was a big letdown. However, they seem to have left enough loose ends for another series. Whether it will achieve the standards of the previous series remains to be seen...

I hope I am not alone but after the first episode I gave up. Too complicated for me.

The first 5 series were pretty good, which is why the viewing figures kept on rising every time. However, the plot line this time seemed very weak, to me, and they seemed to just overcomplicate things to just fill time. I also noted that although last night's programme was originally announced as being 1.5 hours long, it was cut back to just the usual hour. I must admit that I am still puzzled about what happened in the first programme of this latest series. They where supposed to raid a flat to arrest a suspect, but the baddies arranged the diversion of the armed robbery on the way so as to delay the raid. What I can't understand is why they needed to do this because if the baddies (the so called OSG, or in English the organised criminal gang) had the time to organise a group of youngsters to commit the robbery, then they surely had enough time to set up the innocent guy they later found in the flat. It just doesn't/didn't make sense to me, and as I said, it was just over complicating a weak story plot. |

I think it's another one of those drama series where they have run out of ideas how to end it. I have always been interested in films and how stories unfold and are ended as that is what I wanted to do when I left school.
In my humble opinion they should have got a good ending and worked backwards. I saw a quite new film the other night that was really well made without any gory bloodbaths/ shooting/CGI etc scenes that had an ending you wouldn't have guessed This was on Amazon Prime and was called "The Lie" catch it if you can. |

The makers of Lost described the challenge, and the reason their story got -er - lost. They had initially written a two series story, and had worked back from an ending to the initial scene. Then, when the series became so successful, a big wedge of cash was offered to expand it to six series' in length. As a result, they had to find lots of material to pad out the story and it then became the subject of criticism for dragging on too long. A plot twist at the end of a story is regularly praised - that can only work as a writer if you know the twist before you start, and write a story up to that point. e.g. - Star Wars. Paternity twist came as a surprise, but once known, the prequels lose their tension. Fight Club. Knowing the twist, and writing circa. 90mins up to that works. Try a follow-up and it would be difficult. |

Exactly, I know a few people in the film industry that are always trying to make the "perfect movie". How would you go about it ? It's like music everybody has their choice so it is going to be very difficult to make a film that will appeal to a very wide spectrum. I have a friend that lives up the road to me that is an award winning editor on "Game Of Thrones" and although it gets great reviews is brilliantly filmed and costs a fortune to produce it doesn't appeal to me at all. I have another friend that is an independent film producer that makes all sorts of weird (to me) films that I just can't understand, and wonder how on earth he makes any money out of them ? It seems to me that some films are made up as they go along

I thik=nk it mostly works on the basis that the viewer likes to know that they can either guess what will happen or will be happy to be told in advance. The scripts seems mostly to be the same (other than the occasional foray into something completely out of character for the program which much surely be pre-planned on the basis of obtaining publicity and waking up the viewers). PLus they can re-run ideas by simply allocating the scripts to a different "character" - although the snippets I hear when management is watching her "must views" seem to only require 3 or 4 characters but will employ many actors so long as they all sound more or less the same. And act in the same way. Which they pretty much have to do given the scripts seems to work only in short chunks with identical timing for start to firstpoint of conflict, heated exchangem usually with young lass dominant and a "male" character on the defensive (or similar for any of the more recent gender fluid adaptations?) and then cut to a different story line after about 2mins and 35 seconds. With luck on can get 3 story line partials and a couple of link or hard breaks to a different story line in between the Ad slots. Movies can be the same- at least as far as repeating plots, story lines and characterisations. Presumably all on the basis of "it ain't broke, don't fix it." |

The problem is Star Wars fans can be very fickle, changing their views over time as more movies come out

I think the only way to ensure that you will make money out of films or stage productions is to get a load of rich people with money to throw away to sponsor it. That way even if it's rubbish it is at least paid for Hey wait a minute that's just like one of my favourite films of all time "The Producers" (the original one 1967) it looks dated but I have seen it loads of times and virtually know all the words

Clever writing , good acting , camera shots can all make a difference to the success of a film . But at the end of it is the fact that different people like different things . I cannot stand fake rubbish like "Fast and Furious ", but can watch fantasy like " Lord of the Rings " etc if it is well made . And good comedy like " Life of Brian , Airplane , Blazing Saddles , Dr Stranglove " I can watch over & over again . So what makes a successful film , who knows ???. |

Steven Spielberg etc. That's why they're directors and we're merely watchers.

May be the actors and the quality of the promotion made? What makes a successful film in Hollywood terms is the money made, i-e the return on investment. We had successes here I cant explain to myself, like "Bienvenue chez les Cht'its" and "Les Visiteurs" strange comedies. Life of Brian and Airplane were more enjoyable I think.
