Chris Townsend should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Having been the works F2 development car in 1971 HU1 didn't go to Haas until 1972. I'd be interested to know something of its history.

Chris, I don't know much of the cars history in the open wheeled configuration..however Ralph Denny a prior owner and current owner does. email..redenney@msn.com.... he would be happy to fill in the blanks. The car was purchased by Lynn Hanover prior to 1980 from the Colunbus Ohio area and rebodied for the Can-Am......very sorry to say! In 1980 it ran in the Lumbermans race at Mid-Ohio. Again, in 1981 at MO at the Lumbermans..I co- drove..DNS thank god..we were running the twin cam Ford or Lotus motor that came in the car. No power compared to the really fast cars in the field. 1982 Lumberman race..1983 Lumbermans. During this time frame the car was also run in A/SR in club races. The last race it competed in as far as I know was the 1985 Lumbermans race at MO..it was re-done into the IMSA GTP configuration to run the Camel Lights group. Ralph bought the car back and still has it. It's a shame that it stiil isn't in it's original configuration. Any idea where to advertise the body work that I have? I'd hate to see both piece go to the wayside. Thanks........Mike Canan

Mike

Many thanks I'll get in touch with Ralph. I think Apexspeed might be a good place to sell the bodywork.

Rick Carlino's T240 - 11 is here with us and being readied (hopefully) for Dijon, it appears quite different to the 240ies we are used to seeing......

Why's that Simon? More carbon fibre than usual? Wider diffuser? Larger turbo?

Nah, actually quite a lot less of almost everything! Certainly a lot less chassis!

Simon,

does Rick have any history on the car? Like most T240s we know NOTHING about HU11 in period.

No idea but I will ask, however save for the non original rear wing (and a BDA) it appears to be very much as built by Lola.

Even a BDA would have been possible later on in period, say in SCCA by 1975-76. Admittedly I can't think of a Lola T240 that had one straight off, but given that people were putting them into Brabham BT38s and 40s there shouldn't be anything to prevent it...

BTW, Simon, concerning March 80A-16. When did Doug Shierson tell you it was an SCCA club car? I thought all his records were lost when he closed the business. Are there extant sales records for some cars? (Records that would, presumably, be a lot more use than the March sales records, which just show sold to Shierson...)

Chris,

I have several set-up sheets from Shierson's March 80As. As usual I'm on the continent and they are at home. They may indicate chassis numbers as well as motor numbers and I'll check when I get back to see what chassis are indicated.

Charles, you spend more time in Europe than I do (and I live here)!

Look forward to seeing them, because from what I've seen of the documentation of another ex Shierson 80A the chassis number was on every one. (In fact this seems to have been quite a common pro team practice in USA and might solve many of our problems if we can find them. In going through Tim Fortner's archive I've been able to identify cars almost race by race on the basis of set up sheets.)

T-240 lola

I purchased a t 240 from Vin Dileo in Greenwich CT in 1974, a year later I totaled the car at Limerock. It had a Hart small valve, I believe it was a BDD not sure but I have the paper work somewhere, and it was a # chassis....destroyed the tub and parted out the rest. When I find it...I WILL POST THE CHASSIS #.

I've just read through the whole thread and still need to ask - were any T240s or T242s raced in F2 in Europe? Or were they all FB/Atlantics over here (N America)?

(By the way I just looked up a pic of the 'CanAm' body used when Mike Canan drove his T240 in the Lumbermans - ugh!)

Derek, I think there was at least 1 T240, probably 2 used in Euro F2 in '71, Bonnier, or Marko or similar. They were the Lola importers IIRC. I don't think any were out in FAt in Britain. Then there was the T242 converted to F5000 for Gardner in late '71.

Dan, and Derek

T240-HU1 was used in Euro F2 in 1971 by Helmut Marko, Jo Bonnier and Frank Gardner - Dan is right on the money again!
This car was then sold via Carl Haas in 1972
By the mid 80s it was the basis of Ralph Denney's Can Am car and prior to that raced by Lynn Hanover as a sports car.
I think that this might have been Chuck Dietrich's car in 1972-3 and then to Thad King in the mid 70s, though that was described as a T242

According to Lola's records only two T242s were built and both went to Haas, so it looks as though the T242 that became the prototype T300 never had an official chassis number

The FB T242 that was the upgrade to the T240 was not the same as the F5000 T242 that was renamed T300. The were related, as they had a common ancestor in the T240, but Lola quickly dropped the name T242 for their F5000 car when it confused the FB runners who enquired after this "update". The FB T242 came many months after the F5000 car.

You are quite right that the T242-T300 did not have an official chassis number. I have always called it 'P'.

I have some information on HU -1 Lola 240. It started out as a Experimental F2 car for Gardner. It was used later to develope what later became the Lola T300 F5000 model. It was brought back to the United staes and raced as ASR in IMSA racing and SCCA with a modified frame and what looked like a Lola T600 body. I now have this car and it has the original suspension and HU - 1 chassis tag on it. I am gathering parts to either restore it to F 5000 specs or Lola T70 specs. Since it is currently in sports racing configuration, I am leaning towards the Lola T70 route, even though it would probably be more correct historically to restore it to F5000 specs, since it was the first F 5000 Lola T300. I would welcome suggestions from the members. Because of its historic significance to Lola, maybe I could get some assistance from them.

Chris;
I own HU1 now and the history I have found, it was raced by the factory in F2 in Europe by the works driver. Carl Haas was not happy with their F5000 cars performance and took delivery of HU1 and decided to drop in a Chevy V-8 into HU1 along with some other modifications after development work and the first Lola 300 was raced successfully and started that series of F5000 cars that dominated the series. After the demise of F-5000 the car was later modified to race in IMSA Lite series with a body that resembled the Lola 600 Lemans IMSA car, which is it's current configuration. I am going to restore it for vintage racing, but have not decided which class yet. I am researching restoration cost now for the different classes the car was used in.

I am restoring Lola HU1 240 and am looking for a chassis. The original was modified to race in IMSA Lite series as a enclosed sports racer. Are you interested in selling your spare chassis. Mike Winn / 501-580-8623
