It's not all hard luck, couple of times this year I've driven though the Frejus Tunnel from Monza on a Sunday night, and stopped at the first services half way down the French side of the climb. The view the next morning, with the sun coming up behind the mountains, is pretty special, and best enjoyed with a coffee plus fresh quasson or pain au chocolat (or both!) before continuing the journey.

I'm curious reading the recent posts to know how many of those reminiscing about old singists and groups listen to modern stuff? My device playlist has numbers from Perry Como to Hozier, but then I also keep up with modern car technology as well as embrace the historic stuff. Maybe I'm out on a limb.....

Saw them in Pantomime at Wolverhampton Grand when I was about 10.

Genesis, The Who, U2, The Police, Marriliion, Dire Straights and even Adele are more likely to be on my MP3 player.

About the only band from the 60s that I ever saw was the Merseybeats, and that was in a club in Liverpool in about 1984. They were pretty good live but I'm not sure it was the original line up apart from Tony Crane.

During my sojourn on Ten-Tenths, Historic Racing Section, I have noticed that music plays a big part in many members lives. Zef's avatar, Mike's tag line amongst others, and the recent postings here.

It seems to me that while the Tea Break is a good place for these ramblings maybe we should have a separate thread more suited to the lighter side of life, as we often find that subject matter here intrudes on the general well being.

I have decided to launch a new thread that, hopefully will pass scrutineering, and allow all of our humorous colleagues, whits, jokers, and pedallers of trivia to thrive in an atmosphere of goodwill to all men.

No thread ever survives it's original purpose, so I have little hope that this new venture will remain unsullied, however, given 'goodwill' and a stout heart, it could flourish.

I invite like minded, kindred spirits to enjoy and contribute too;

Happy Days ( Smiles, Jokes, Reminiscence, Trivia, Music.)

With jolly good luck,

Bauble.

I'll leave it to John to make a final decision on that one but my opinion is that this is the place for the lighthearted discussion, cars, stuck on ferries, music, my sore neck and toothache (did I mention that before) or whatever, or you could take it to Parc Ferme where you can talk about almost anything you like.
Historic Racing forum should be about historic racing and this thread is only here due to popular consensus.

I did mention scrutineering Tim, as I know how mods think, having previous experience, or is that 'form'?. However, while this is an Historic Racing forum, it is still about people, and it seems anything goes in Tea Break so it not the substance that would change just the venue.

As always I bow to the superior judgement of my betters.

Are there any strings attached to the 20p? Will I have to accept strict limits on my posts, or limit access to certain threads, and if it is repayable what interest rate are you charging, Mr Wonga?

Remember, they laughed at Newton when the apple fell on his head.

Bauble.

'Tea Break' is just that- chatting about anything relevant to the historic posters, rather than historic racing itself!

No, I don't understand how it works either. I just know that it's a lot easier to play music using one in a car, than it is to try to stop the needle jumping on a record player!

There's me trying to be helpful by offering you an EU style bailout loan and that's all the thanks I get.
Bob don't worry about the interest rate as I can offer you another loan to pay that one off providing you make changes to your fiscal policies. You need to come up with your intended solutions by midnight on the 30th, you can decide which 30th it'll be yourself after you've taken and ignored the results of any forum referendum you hold.

Too a different kind of music- that made by a steam loco at flat chat. Beeb had a piece this morning on the ongoing Flying Scotsman restoration. Made me laugh when a engineer casually mentioned that they had to cut off the front end of the frame, as too far gone, and build / create a new one! Bit like working on an old Ford, really.....

Apparently the iconic loco could be moving under own steam again later this year.

It appears to have been a catalogue of disasters from the beginning and a case of you pays your money and take a chance, this didn't pay off in the Flying Scotsman's case. There's another BBC report from 2011 saying it had just completed a £1.5m restoration, seems it didn't go well.

So It's not much different to when we buy cars, get them home and realise we may have bought a basket case or something not quite as it seemed, this is the same but on a much bigger scale.
The reports on here are interesting reading if you have a few spare minutes to skim through them.

Wow, they kept all that quiet on the telly this morning! Doesn't show the NRM in too good a light.... According to the prog the loco is now in the hands of one specialist engineering company, rather than with the museum and many sub contractors?

Bit like buying a race car 'ready to race'- several £k on parts plus many man hours later and it may be!

A fascinating skim.

One wonders if the original engine was in fact built to specification in its original form.

The precise definition of the word "ready" seems to be the crux or the matter.

For £1.5 million I would hope it's unstoppable.

Early race today Iain? 7 am sitting in the rain waiting for the day to start.

7pm on the ferry.

Good work that man. The steak must be well deserved.

I thought the reports on the news this morning were a bit odd. I have a recollection of attending a conference at the NRM about 7 years ago (nothing to do with rail) and being shown the FS in refit then. I was thus surprised to hear this morning that it was about to complete a it's overhaul with a specialist contractor rather than at the museum. I was also surprised when a spokesperson said that the refit had been slow because of the need to involve. Professionals rather than volunteers. That comment appeRed to be an unsubtle dig. In light of the report that Tim has highlighted it seems that there maybe a can of worms left to be made public.

Good to see you again Iain, nasty conditions today - two days of 80 degree heat and then on and off rain on race day.

Co driver went offat Les Fagnes, not too bad. Shame we had a TR4 that can do 3:03, a Marcos and an Elan in our class but 3:12s when dry will do us. Car hasn't finished last two Spa outings.

TR jumped the start after the S/C went in. Lots of overtaking on waved yellows too, what is it with people??
