Very disapointing. I hope they do some development at race weekends. I always respect that more (and of course enjoy it more).

Isn't there a testing limit for cars that have raced? Maybe they'll skip laguna as well (hope not) and spend the winter perfecting the car.

Wonder if this is gonna be a "stillborn"?

Maybe Porsche has decided that P2 is the wrong pitch for the manufacturer with the most Le Mans wins, and is going straight for P1?

That would be nice - very, very, very nice.

Mazda are already back, they are a semi works team at the moment in the ALMS with B-K Motorsports.

Well, they state that they are skipping PLM due to some reliability issues (electrical and differential problems) that have popped up in testing. I think fans would prefer to see the car race, and not finish, then not see it at all. I think history has shown that those who race and work out the problems, often do better than those who just test to perfection.

This is not the end of the ALMS.

This is Porsche, we know that their reputation is to debut a new car that is an extremely well-sorted, very reliable instant frontrunner in its class. They aren't going to do anything that will be very likely to damage that reputation. It's nice to see a new car being tested throughly, actually. When they come (and they will, the outlay for this project is too high for stillbirth) they will be wonderful. Stop worrying!

This might be the end of the ALMS? Really, that's just plain silly. Back that up with concrete evidence, or at least your logic, if you're going to spout it.

I agree with you about what fans prefer to see, Fogelhund. I just think Porsche is taking a slightly different view than "more cars is best" the way fans logically do. They want marketable results, and reliability is a great one for roadcar buyers.

The word on this is that the RS Spyder is quick, but it needs more testing in order to get the car ready for the track... especially if its an endurance race such as Petit. I am dissapointed for sure as I will be attending Petit, but if the car is having teething trouble then Porsche has every right to postpone the car's debut (esp. with the new testing limitations put in place for the ALMS).

Not sure where I see the issue that it appears many are having with this. It certainly is Porsche's right to pick the time and place of their debut. If they decide to move it to next season's opener at Sebring then fair enough.

"...esp. with the new testing limitations put in place for the ALMS)."

Are there new testing regulations for 2006 that would hurt them if they competed in 2005? If not, the 2005 rules do not apply to them as they planned to compete in only two races in 2005.

IMSA Code 2nd Edition, June 7, 2005

4.7 These limits apply to any ALMS full season entrant or any team registered to compete in the ALMS at three or more events during the season. IMSA may impose limits on the participation of any team that has exceeded these testing limits at its sole discretion, including, but not limited to, limiting eligibility for championship points."

...and there you have it. Good find LouisTheShark.

And Mike, I think the problem people are having is that they were just dissapointed that they weren't going to see the RS Spyder at Petit... nothing more, nothing less. However, as I stated in my earlier post I totally agree with you that Porsche has every right to postpone the debut of the new LMP if they feel its necessary. After hearing of the struggles they've been having with the car in its initial tests it really didn't suprise me when I read the news.
