Sadly, it appears it's true. This is the article from Scotland on Sunday

Rally driver killed in race
NICHOLAS CHRISTIAN

A VETERAN Scottish rally driver was killed in an accident during the second round of the national championships in Kielder Forest yesterday.

Roy Herron, 50, from Kilwinning, was co-driving for Glasgow’s Alan Doncaster in their Peugeot 206 in the second round of the New Pig Scottish Rally Championship.

The high-speed accident happened as they approached a tight left-hand corner midway through the penultimate nine-mile stage of the Brick & Steel Border Counties Rally at Dodd.

The Peugeot slid into a ditch before crashing heavily into mature trees.

Doncaster was taken by air ambulance to Newcastle General Hospital suffering from abdominal, chest, spine, leg and facial injuries.

Herron was pronounced dead at the scene. He had competed in motorsport since he was 17-years-old and his life was steeped in the sport.

Born and raised in Machars in Dumfries & Galloway, Herron was an active member of the local car club before joining the Coltness Car Club.

He leaves a wife, Beth, and son, Roger, 21, who had also been competing in the event.

My sincerest sympathies to his family and friends

Yeah, was really sad, I was at the rally competing, at first we were really annoyed that the last stage was cancelled as the first, fifth and sixth stages were cancelled! When we returned to Jedburgh we found out what had happened, everything that we were so annoyed about seemed to pale in to significance.
My deepest sympathies go to his family, especially Roger and his Mother.

At Charterhall the cars had black stickers on in remembrance. I thought it was a ice touch.
